Very little now remains of the Manchester coalfield in the North West UK. The engineering excellence, the genius of the coal mining industry, the toil and the hardships of the mining communities have long since passed into memory. This publication records the history of one such mining community, Astley Green Colliery, situated between Leigh and Manchester. As well a the history of the colliery, it also describes the efforts of many who seek to preserve remains of what is now left of the colliery .... the headgear, the engine house and the magnificent engine contained within it.
