Henry Chalfant's Graffiti Archive Vol. 1
Henry Chalfant's Graffiti Archive is a work of visual anthropology and one of the seminal documents of American popular culture in the late twentieth century. The original artworks depicted here, which have been the inspiration and guide for thousands of youthful artists around the world, were never able to endure for long before the city cleaned the cars, or the artists' enemies crossed them out. Chalfant's patience and determination in hunting down and capturing these masterpieces with his camera has left the world with a representative cross section of some of the best work by the most talented young artists who painted New York City's subway cars in the seventies and eighties, the golden age of graffiti. A handful of Chalfant's photos have been featured in such books as Subway Art and films like Style Wars. Now for the first time, the entire collection will be made available, released serially over the next year until all 800 trains have been published.

This iBook is an excellent compliment to the many other print releases that have been published over the years. And it's not really "big", it's massive! Be prepared, the full DL takes up just under 1GB. If you enjoy hardcover graffiti showcase classics from Martha Cooper you will definitely enjoy seeing how fresh the images look on the iPad screen. I think it elevates the impact of the bright and vibrant imagery to have the flexibility of the digital platform. I would also strongly disagree with anybody who suggests that Mr. Chalfant is not entitled to publish his own creative property as he sees fit. His photographs OF the graffiti are no less of a valid and unique artistic enterprise than the graffiti itself. The basic intention of street art is to aggressively harness the power of the public forum where millions of people, including the artists themselves, would have had the opportunity to view and photograph the final product. Besides, the size of the archive is an excellent value for the price. An excellent buy.

Mr. Chalfant has held these artist's work/images hostage for 30 years. Sadly a number of the artists have passed away. He now is showing this work on an exclusive platform instead of posting it on the internet for all to see. This art was created for the people by the people, not by the photographers. This Art is not a Crime and GREED does not have an expiration date..........MW

Herein is a collection a huge sampling of its DNA of some of its most influential Style Masters who learned the dark arts from generations past. Henry Chalfant has had the privilege to witness and document the movement through photography and personal relationships with the writers themselves affording us a window not just into the art but to the thoughts about the creative process, the obstacles and dangers. Graffiti subway art and the street art that it was gave birth to the modern democracy of art making, predating Haring, Basquiat, Fairey and Banksy, these photos will show how unique and revolutionary the movement was and was becoming before the 'great buff' and the 'style wars'.
