The most beloved and enduring duo in American crime fiction is back.
Psychologist Alex Delaware and Homicide Detective Milo Sturgis race against time to find a twisted killer in this riveting thriller from the #1 New York Times bestselling “master of suspense” (Los Angeles Times).
People come to Los Angeles to chase their dreams. Sometimes they find themselves cast into a nightmare. And sometimes, the most ardent dreamers turn out to be the most vicious monsters.
The body of an aspiring actress is found dumped near a hospital emergency room. She’s been drugged and murdered and the motive for the callous crime remains maddeningly out of reach. Until, a prime suspect materializes. Another Hollywood hopeful. Only to be shot dead by a sniper using a weapon that turns out to have been catalogued in a previous murder. And another, before that. It’s not long before more bodies begin piling up.
What makes the murderous spree baffling is the apparent lack of connection among the victims. Is this the work of a random thrill killer, the toughest of all cases to unravel?
But as Alex and Milo dig deeper they’re faced with an even knottier scenario: a highly complex killer with deep-seated motivation that will require all of their highly honed skills to decipher.
The latest page-turner from #1 New York Times bestseller Jonathan Kellerman, is a tale of psychological complexity, dark suspense, and shocking surprises. A wild ride through L.A.’s surreal underbelly climaxed by an edge-of-the chair conclusion.

Slow. Read all his books and this one dragged.

I have always enjoyed reading books by the Kellermans. I am a big fan of Faye Kellerman’s work, and her stories have consistently kept me interested from beginning to end. Open Season was the first time I picked up a novel written solely by Jonathan Kellerman, and I was not sure what to expect. After finishing the book, I can honestly say I was impressed and eager to read more from his Alex Delaware series. Jonathan Kellerman has a strong writing style that pulls you into the story without feeling forced or overly complicated. I appreciated how the intrigue built naturally as the case developed, allowing the reader to experience the investigation alongside the characters. The partnership between Milo and Alex felt authentic, and it was interesting to see how their different strengths complemented each other. One of the things I liked most was that the suspect was not obvious from the start. Instead, the tension grew steadily, and the truth emerged through careful work and realistic storytelling, which made the ending even more satisfying. The characters were well developed, the pacing was consistent, and the case itself was layered in a way that kept me guessing until the very end. It felt like a true investigation, not something rushed or forced to fit a certain pattern. Jonathan Kellerman’s ability to create believable scenarios and relatable characters is a major strength, and it sets his work apart from many others in the genre. Overall, I found Open Season to be a very enjoyable and rewarding read. If you enjoy a good mystery with strong character development, thoughtful pacing, and an ending that feels earned, I highly recommend picking up this book. It is a great introduction to the Alex Delaware series, and if you are like me, it will leave you wanting to read more of Jonathan Kellerman’s work. Fans of smart, well-written crime novels will find a lot to appreciate in this series.
