Woman, 38, dies in Greece after bomb explodes in her hands

A woman has died in Greece after a bomb she was carrying exploded in her hands, police have said.

The 38-year-old was carrying the device to place it outside a nearby bank at around 5am on Saturday in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki. Several storefronts and vehicles were damaged by the explosion, police said.

"It appears that she was carrying an explosive device and planned to plant it a bank's ATM," a senior police official told Reuters news agency. Something went wrong and it exploded in her hands, the official added.

The woman was known to authorities after taking part in several robberies, according to police. They are investigating her possible ties to extreme left-wing groups.
