Man arrested on suspicion of breaking into Windsor Castle grounds

A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of breaking into the grounds of Windsor Castle.

The man was spotted by Metropolitan Police officers after 1pm on Sunday and "quickly challenged". He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of trespass and for possession of Class-A drugs.

The man was then passed into the custody of Thames Valley Police. The police said he has since been bailed, and an investigation is ongoing.

Sky News understands no members of the Royal Family were in the castle at the time. The police added that the man had not entered the inner grounds of the castle.

It is a criminal offence to trespass on a protected site designated under the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005. Two men reportedly scaled a 6ft fence, and then used a stolen truck to break through a security gate - after fleeing on quad bikes. The King and Queen were not in residence at the time.

Another security incident took place on Christmas Day in 2021 - involving a man climbing a fence at Windsor Castle, armed with a crossbow and claiming he wanted to kill Queen Elizabeth II.
