One of the UK's busiest train stations issues 'major disruption' warning

Commuters have been told to expect "major disruption" into Monday evening after a signalling problem at London Waterloo.

Fourteen platforms at the station were out of use after issues were first reported to National Rail at around 5.30am on Monday. National Rail said all lines had reopened but services to and from Waterloo "may continue to be severely delayed or cancelled".

It advised rail users that "major disruption is expected" until the "end of the day". South Western Railway (SWR) apologised for the delays - and advised passengers to "check before they travel".

It added it was "gradually reintroducing train services across our network". In a further update on Monday afternoon, SWR said services "may be delayed, revised or cancelled".

On its website, SWR added: "We are currently recovering our services, however trains in and out of London Waterloo are subject to cancellations, delays and last-minute alterations. "In particular, trains to and from London Waterloo through to Winchester, Southampton, Bournemouth and Weymouth are heavily disrupted with services experiencing major delays, alterations and cancellations." National Rail said tickets will be accepted at no extra cost on a number of bus and train services.
