Two women arrested in Nuneaton on suspicion of a public order offence after Sky News interview

Two women have been arrested on suspicion of public order offences after a Sky News interview in Nuneaton was disrupted by people shouting.

30-year-old woman and a woman aged 43 were both arrested on suspicion of a public order offence. The 43-year-old was also arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated common assault.

Warwickshire Police said it made the arrests as part of an "investigation into an interaction between several members of the public that has been widely shared on social media and in the news". The force said the footage showed members of the public being "subjected to racial abuse, with one reportedly being pushed".

It follows a report by Sky News correspondent Shamaan Freeman-Powell about tensions in the Nuneaton community over asylum seekers. Freeman-Powell was speaking on camera to a man called Zahin, 32, when women approached him and began shouting about rape.

A few years ago, the number of asylum seekers in Nuneaton was in the single digits, but the figures have since grown to 247 by June this year.

The latest figures show there are 19 asylum seekers per 10,000 residents, placing Nuneaton 87th in the country in terms of concentration..
