Man charged with sexual assault of woman sunbathing at popular beach

A man has been charged with the sexual assault of a woman as she sunbathed on a popular beach in East Sussex.

The alleged attack on a woman aged in her 50s happened at Camber Sands, near Rye, on 25 August, said Sussex Police. Mohammed Maatoug, 33, of Boxley Road, Maidstone, Kent, has been charged with sexual assault by penetration.

The accused appeared before magistrates in Brighton on Tuesday and was remanded in custody until a further hearing on 7 October. A Sussex Police spokesman said: "Police in East Sussex have charged a man with sexual assault by penetration.

"A woman in her 50s reported being sexually assaulted by a man as she sunbathed in the dunes at Camber Sands, Rye, around 5.30pm on 25 August." Police said an investigation was launched and an arrest was made on Saturday..
