Newly opened bridge in China collapses

A newly opened bridge has partially collapsed in China.

In footage, part of the bridge, in China's southwestern province of Sichuan, crashes into the ground as a huge cloud of smoke rises up next to a mountain. There were no reports of any casualties.

Police in the city of Maerkang had closed the 758-metre-long Hongqi bridge to traffic on Monday afternoon after cracks appeared on nearby shops and roads. Shifts were also seen in the terrain of a mountain, local government said.

Construction of the bridge finished earlier this year, according to the contractor Sichuan Road & Bridge Group on social media.

The bridge is located on a highway linking the country's heartland with Tibet. An investigation into the cause of the collapse has been launched.
