'Pay up': PM demands Russian oligarch transfers £2.5bn to help Ukraine or face legal action

The UK government has demanded that Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich gives £2.5bn from the sale of Chelsea Football Club to be used for humanitarian purposes in Ukraine, or face legal action.

Sir Keir Starmer announced at Prime Minister's Questions at lunchtime that the Treasury is issuing a licence for the transfer of the frozen funds to a foundation to be used to provide aid in Ukraine. If he does not do so within 90 days, the government will take him to court in the UK.

"And if you don't, we're prepared to go to court, so every penny reaches those whose lives have been torn apart by Putin's illegal war." Home Secretary Yvette Cooper told Sky News political editor Beth Rigby the government has "tried every possible avenue to get him to do the right thing.
