High street giant has bumper Christmas but remains cautious amid worsening jobs market

One of the UK's largest clothing retailers has reported a bumper Christmas but warned of a slowdown.

The update from department store Next, considered a good indicator of the health of the high street, contrasts with the fortunes of Claire's and The Original Factory Shop (TOFS), which are on the brink of collapse with more than 2,000 jobs at risk. Next has, for the fifth time in a row, increased its profit guidance, believing it will have a pre-tax profit of £1.15bn for the year to 31 January, £15m more than expected, thanks to strong sales in the run-up to Christmas.
