Performance Based Navigation

Performance Based Navigation

This book is written by pilots for pilots and is designed to give you a basic grounding in all the essential Performance Based Navigation principles.

Commission Regulation (EU) No. 539/2016 Performance Based Navigation (PBN) amends Commission Regulation (EU) No. 1178/2011 (the Aircrew Regulation).

It requires that:

From 25 August 2018 pilots may fly in accordance with PBN routes and procedures provided that they have a PBN privileges endorsement to their Instrument Rating (IR);

From 25 August 2020 all pilots must have a PBN privileges endorsement to their Instrument Rating (IR) or En-route Instrument Rating (EIR).

As of May 2018, several Approved Training Organisations (ATOs) have already adopted PBN in their training syllabus. Consequently their students are entitled to take the new Radio Navigation examination, which will ensure that their IR is suitably endorsed.

Padpilot’s ATPL(A) Radio Navigation Book already includes compliant chapters for PBN.

This Padpilot book contains the theoretical knowledge required for PBN. It has been developed for individuals who are required to complete the supplemental PBN examination and have not previously purchased Padpilot’s ATPL(A) Radio Navigation Book.

Any individual sitting an EASA exam which did not examine PBN knowledge will be required to sit a supplemental PBN examination at a later date to gain a PBN privileges endorsement to their Instrument Rating (IR) or En-route Instrument Rating (EIR).
