A fascinating behind-the-scenes look at Friends, published for the twenty-fifth anniversary of the show's premiere. Howyoudoin’?
In September 1994, six friends sat down in their favorite coffee shop and began bantering about sex, relationships, jobs, and just about everything else. A quarter of a century later, new fans are still finding their way into the lives of Rachel, Ross, Joey, Chandler, Monica, and Phoebe, and thanks to the show’s immensely talented creators, its intimate understanding of its youthful audience, and its reign during network television’s last moment of dominance, Friends has become the most influential and beloved show of its era. Friends has never gone on a break, and this is the story of how it all happened.
Noted pop culture historian Saul Austerlitz utilizes exclusive interviews with creators David Crane and Marta Kauffman, executive producer Kevin Bright, director James Burrows, and many other producers, writers, and cast members to tell the story of Friends’ creation, its remarkable decade-long run, and its astonishing Netflix-fueled afterlife. Readers will go behind the scenes to hear from the people who were present as the show was developed and cast, written and filmed. There will be talk of trivia contests, prom videos, trips to London, Super Bowls, lesbian weddings, wildly popular hairstyles, superstar cameos, mad dashes to the airport, and million-dollar contracts. They’ll also discover surprising details—that Monica and Joey were the show’s original romantic couple, how Danielle Steel probably saved Jennifer Aniston’s career, and why Friends is still so popular that if it was a new show, its over-the-air broadcast reruns would be the ninth-highest-rated program on TV.
The show that defined the 1990s has a legacy that has endured beyond wildest expectations. And in this hilarious, informative, and entertaining book, readers will now understand why.

Enjoyed reading the behind the scenes story of Friends. I watched Friends from Day 1 and it was must watch TV. As a Friends fan, this is a must read book.

Pros- -some interesting facts I did not know -some actual access to show creators and writing staff Cons- -very little information revealed that has not been discussed before -whole chapters recapping episodes and character history. Totally unnecessary. Anyone buying this book would be a Friends fan and have seen most, if not all, the episodes. We don’t need whole chapters detailing Ross and Rachel’s relationship or a beat for beat recap of a popular episode. The beginning of the chapter would make the reader think they would be getting some sort of behind-the-scenes look at why this plot line or character development was chosen, but they never delve into it. -the most interesting chapter-about the machinations of the writers’ room-was featured fully in online magazines like Vulture as a book preview. Reading this preview made me want to buy the book but I was fully disappointed the entire book was not as well written or revealing as this chapter. -the other interviews in the book aside from the writers and creators are some minor guest stars like Tate Donovan or an actress who played Carol, Ross’ ex-wife, or another actress who played a love interest who featured in one episode. No real access to major cast members. -Some interesting gossip tidbits are dropped and then hardly delved into. A very cursory chapter about Matthew Perry’s addiction troubles, very shallow. No real insight into what the rest of the cast experienced. Some hints about Aniston’s marriage with Brad Pitt, that possibly the show or her career affected it in some manner, but it’s brief and then dropped totally. -kind of a problematic chapter about the lawsuit filed against the show concerning misogyny. Basically all and all, a rush job in time for the 25th anniversary. Save your money and time.
