**Volume One covers A-N. Volume Two (O-Z) is also available on Apple Books.** Noah Webster's 1864 "Unabridged Dictionary," with its 114,000 entries, is a monumental reference work with no equal, and the first of Webster's dictionaries to be known as the "Unabridged" edition. According to James A.H. Murray, the editor of the Oxford English Dictionary, Webster's unabridged edition of 1864 "acquired an international fame...It was held to be superior to every other dictionary and taken as the leading authority on the meaning of words, not only in America and England, but also throughout the Far East." The 1864 unabridged edition, featuring hundreds of beautifully detailed illustrations, is a massive expansion of Webster's highly regarded 1828 "An American Dictionary of the English Language." Sometimes called the Webster–Mahn edition, because it features revisions by Dr. C. A. F. Mahn, this edition of 1864 is nearly 2,000 pages in length, containing the vocabulary of the 1828 edition plus an additional 44,000 entries. For the first time on Apple Books, this "Library Edition" showcases the dictionary in its original format, made from full color, high resolution scans of the antique hardcover. To facilitate quick navigation on digital devices, a thorough table of contents is offered, which allows readers to quickly jump to within 15 pages of any desired entry. The book scanned for this Apple Books edition is one of the best printings of the 1864 edition - it is a particularly high resolution digital replica made from an 1886 printing, which features many supplements, thousands of additional words, an index of illustrations and much more which was not not found in the 1864 first printing. The text and illustrations from this 1886 printing are generally sharp, detailed and clear. There is so much packed into each page, one could spend a lifetime studying this book. With its almost 2,000 antique pages and hundreds of miniature illustrations, there is a good chance you will find what you are looking for, and more. For a glimpse into one of the most thorough dictionaries ever created, please use the "look inside" feature.
