Lieutenant Charles Heywood has had his fill of adventure. Battle-weary and disillusioned, he returns to England, resolved to settle down to a quiet, uneventful life on an estate of his own. If he's going to unravel them, he'll need the assistance of someone as daring as he is.

As skilled with pistols as she is on horseback, she's never met an obstacle she can't surmount—or a man she can't win. That is, until she encounters the infuriatingly somber Lieutenant Heywood. But Kate refuses to be deterred by the raven-haired soldier's strong, silent facade. After all, faint heart never won handsome gentleman.
From the wilds of rural Somersetshire to the glittering ballrooms of early-Victorian London, Charles and Kate embark on a cross-country quest to solve a decades' old mystery. Will the greatest danger be to their hearts—or to their lives?

I don’t believe it ever takes me more than a day to read a MiMi Mathews book. I am always invested by the end of page one and can’t stop until the amazing The End. Spunky, adventurous Kate, Lady Katherine Beresford, meets dashing Charles Heywood on his trip home from his seafaring journey. Although not as spicy (but clean) as her first two Somerset stories, this book spins a bit of mystery while diving into some of the MCs back story. While this book can be read as a standalone, Matthews has revisited characters and created a series from her Somerset stories based upon the ongoing cheers of her readers. To read stories of the next generation is a delight this reader can’t describe. I remain enamored with Alex Wyndham’s betrayal of Arthur Heywood from The Work of Art so having both he and Charles Heywood in one book is heaven. I am not ever inclined to completely enjoy a male voice narrating the female parts but Wyndham captures them well. This book is suitable for teens and older with no inappropriate intimate scenes. There are a few “d—-“ and “bloody h—-“ in the dialogue.

Absolutely amazing! I’m relatively new to Mimi Matthews’ books, but every single one I’ve read has become an instant favorite. I wanted to read the previous two books in this series before reading this one, but life became super busy and so I read it without reading the other books. Right now I can just hear fellow Mimi Matthews fans everywhere crying “how could you?!” But, honestly I absolutely loved it without having read the first two books and am now motivated more than ever to read them. This book was an utter delight! From start to finish I loved the grumpy, stoic Charles and the confident, fiery Kate. Their first meeting is an adorable meet cute all orchestrated by a mongrel dog. Kate is at once enchanted by the handsome lieutenant and determines to pursue him. What she sets her mind to, she usually gets. After leaving the navy, Charles desires to return home and find a place to settle down. When he receives a mysterious letter attached to a package from Kate, he immediately suspects her of mischief. But, when Kate arrives at his home unexpectedly (all orchestrated with the unwitting help of her brother), he quickly discovers she did not send the note. What follows is a family mystery Kate can’t help but get involved in. As they try to solve the mystery surrounding Satterthwaite Court, it becomes harder for Charles to resist Kate’s charms. With quick witted banter, sizzling chemistry, endearing characters, a compelling mystery with a little bit of danger, and some amazing passionate kisses, this romance is definitely a must read and a favorite of the year. Highly recommend to historical romance fans! Though it’s the third book in the series, it can definitely be read as a standalone. Now I can’t wait to go back and read the previous books. I’m already looking forward to the next book in the series. Thanks to the author for the advanced complimentary copy. All opinions are my own and voluntarily given.

“She knew now that she could never spend her days stitching silently in a drawing room, content to be admired by some respectful adoring spouse. She was made for the storm. For braving the mad currents of life, not sheltering in the shallows.” Lady Katherine Beresford is beautiful, bold, fearless, and impetuous. She’s definitely her mother’s daughter. After an unsuccessful season, Kate is completely bored with men until she meets a handsome man who rescues a scraggly puppy in the muddy streets of London. Not one to worry about social conventions, she finds out who he is and immediately begins to pursue him. Charles Heywood is on his way home after having resigned from the Navy. His swashbuckling days are over and all he wants now is to settle down to a quiet, sedate life. But after receiving a mysterious letter, followed by a surprise visit from Kate, a whole new adventure is about to begin for him. Mimi Matthews has once again crafted a beautiful love story that drew me in from beginning to end, and I absolutely loved it! Charles and Kate are fabulously developed characters with such great chemistry. The story was well-paced and engaging, with a suspenseful mystery to solve and a dangerous villain that you love to hate. The parents of Kate and Charles are characters from two previously published books, and I loved their appearance in this story. They are obviously older now, but I was delighted that they are still so much in love with each other. Many thanks to the author for an eARC. All opinions are my own.
