Man charged with sexual assault of a male after police called to Epping hotel

A man is due to appear in court today to face several charges, including the sexual assault of a male, after police were called to the Bell Hotel in Epping.

Mohammed Sharwarq, a 32-year-old Syrian national, was arrested after police were called to the hotel on the Epping High Road yesterday, Essex Police said. Sharwarq has been charged with two counts of common assault, four counts of assault by beating and one count of sexual assault on a male, contrary to section 3 of the Sexual Offences Act 2003.

Sky News understands the alleged offences took place inside the hotel between 25 July and 12 August. Sharwarq been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court today, Wednesday 13 August.

The arrest followed weeks of protests outside the hotel. Neil Hudson, the Conservative MP for Epping Forest, said last month that the protests were a crisis that "risks boiling over".
