Six immigration officers charged over alleged thefts from migrants

Six immigration officers have been charged with stealing from migrants and laundering money.

The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said the alleged offences took place between August 2021 and November 2022. Malcolm McHaffie, head of the CPS special crime division, said prosecutors had worked with the Home Office's anti-corruption unit on the case.

All six defendants will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on 29 January. They are: Besmir Matera, 36, of Reigate, Surrey: Charged with conspiracy to steal; misconduct in public office; concealing, disguising, converting, transferring or removing criminal property (money laundering); obtaining leave to enter to remain in the UK by deception; and three counts of possession of an identity document with improper intention.
