A 23-year-old man has been stabbed to death in southeast London on New Year's Eve.

The Metropolitan Police has launched a murder inquiry after officers were called to the scene in Grove Street, near Rotherhithe, in Lewisham borough, at roughly 12.35pm on Wednesday, and found the man had been stabbed in the chest. The London Ambulance Service and London's Air Ambulance also attended but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

No arrests have been made but inquiries are ongoing. The victim's family has been informed and is being supported by specialist officers.

Detective chief inspector Sam Townsend, who is leading the investigation, said: "Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the victim's family and friends during this incredibly difficult time. "Our investigation is progressing swiftly as we work to establish the full circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.

"We understand that this will understandably cause concern within the local community. Please be assured that we have increased patrols in the area, and this investigation remains our highest priority." A crime scene remains in place..
