The Immortal Mind - Michael Egnor & Denyse O'leary

The Immortal Mind

A neuroscientist and surgeon makes an argument for the existence of a spiritual human soul in this eye-opening book. Many scientists and doctors believe that there is no such thing as the soul. That there is no part of us that persists beyond death. We are not spiritual in any respect. We are made up of cells and tissue, and completely controlled by a material organ in our heads: the brain. In this groundbreaking book, Dr. Michael Egnor makes the case—based on 40 years of practice and over 7,000 brain surgeries—that science has gotten it all wrong.  The human brain is incredible, mysterious, and powerful. But it’s not what makes us who we are. The soul does that. Drawing on the most important research studies in neuroscience, Dr. Egnor presents evidence that the brain alone does not explain the mind. He explores, using modern neuroscience and his vast surgical experience, how inside every damaged brain there is a thinking, feeling person with a spiritual soul that transcends the brain. He also uses fascinating case studies to show how research on conjoined twins who share parts of their brains, on patients in deep coma who are still able to communicate with people around them, on near-death experiences, and on artificial intelligence all make a scientific case for the existence of the spiritual human soul. Engaging, thought-provoking, and groundbreaking, The Immortal Mind shows here that some aspect of who we are is spiritual and immortal, transcending the physical body.

Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind - Shunryu Suzuki

Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind

Named one of the 100 Best Spiritual Books of the Twentieth Century (Spirituality & Practice ) A 50th Anniversary edition of the bestselling Zen classic on meditation, maintaining a curious and open mind, and living with simplicity. "In the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert's there are few." So begins this most beloved of all American Zen books. Seldom has such a small handful of words provided a teaching as rich as has this famous opening line. In a single stroke, the simple sentence cuts through the pervasive tendency students have of getting so close to Zen as to completely miss what it's all about. It is an instant teaching on the first page--and that's just the beginning. In the fifty years since its original publication, Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind has become one of the great modern spiritual classics, much beloved, much reread, and much recommended as the best first book to read on Zen. Suzuki Roshi presents the basics--from the details of posture and breathing in zazen to the perception of nonduality--in a way that is not only remarkably clear, but that also resonates with the joy of insight from the first to the last page.

The Screwtape Letters - C. S. Lewis

The Screwtape Letters

This is the classic written by C. S. Lewis as a dedication to his dear friend J. R. R. Tolkien. A masterpiece of satire, The Screwtape Letters has entertained and enlightened readers the world over with its sly and ironic portrayal of human life from the vantage point of Screwtape, a highly placed assistant to "Our Father Below". At once wildly comical, deadly serious, and strikingly original, C. S. Lewis presents to us the correspondences of the worldly-wise old devil, Screwtape, to his nephew Wormwood, a novice demon in charge of securing the damnation of an ordinary young man. The Screwtape Letters is the most engaging and humorous account of temptation - and triumph over it - ever written. This edition includes the hilarious and enlightening sequel, Screwtape Proposes a Toast, where the scene is in Hell at the annual dinner of the Tempters’ Training College for young Devils. Screwtape, who is the guest of honour, rises up to propose a toast. ‘The book is sparkling yet truly reverent, in fact a perfect joy, and should become a classic.’ - The Guardian ‘Excellent, hard-hitting, challenging, provoking.’ - The Observer

I Choose Joy - Chip Ingram

I Choose Joy

Joy—our lifeline and strength through life’s suffering. C.S. Lewis said, "Joy is the serious business of Heaven.” Too often, however, joy is missing from our lives. When we look to Scripture, we see examples of early Christians thriving even amid hardship and persecution. How do we recapture that deep and stubborn joy? Pastor and author Chip Ingram takes us to God’s Word, helping us shift away from self-centered happiness and toward lasting joy found in God’s goodness. “Choosing joy in the midst of difficulties goes against all our instincts. When you look at life through the lens of your circumstances, what happens? You’re happy when circumstances are good and sad or angry when they aren’t, right? But if you look at your circumstances through the lens of God’s goodness—his power and promises—that’s a higher perspective. You can experience joy because you know a good God is going to take even the worst and most difficult things in life and use them for your good. Living above our circumstances occurs when our perspective interprets our circumstances rather than our circumstances determining our perspective.” You cannot choose your life’s circumstances, but you can choose how to respond. Join esteemed Bible teacher, Chip Ingram, on this journey to restore the essential Christian virtue of JOY!

The Believer's Authority - Kenneth E. Hagin

The Believer's Authority

The Believer’s Undiscovered Authority. “Do we have authority that we don’t know about—that we haven’t discovered—that we’re not using?” Rev. Kenneth E. Hagin asked himself this question when he was a young preacher. “I had had little glimpses of spiritual authority once in a while,” he writes in The Believer’s Authority. “Like others I had stumbled upon it and had exercised it without knowing what I was doing. “As a result of my studies, I concluded that we as a Church have authority on the earth that we’ve never yet realized. “A few of us have barely gotten to the edge of that authority, but before Jesus comes again, there’s going to be a whole company of believers who will rise up and with the authority that is theirs . . . they will do the work that God intended they should do.” In this book you will discover:  • The prayers of Paul  • The weapons of our warfare  • What authority is  • How to exercise authority • How to break the power of the devil

The Great Divorce - C. S. Lewis

The Great Divorce

This powerful and exquisitely written fantasy is one of C. S. Lewis's most enduring works of fiction. It is a profound meditation on good and evil and on what God truly offers us. In a dream, the narrator boards a bus on a drizzly afternoon in Hell and embarks on an amazing voyage to Heaven. Anyone in Hell is invited on board, and anyone is welcome to remain in Heaven if he or she so chooses. But do we really want to live in Heaven? This dazzling allegory about Heaven and Hell is one of Lewis’ most brilliantly creative tales, where we discover that the gates of Hell are actually locked from the inside.

Imagine Heaven - John Burke

Imagine Heaven

It's obvious from the bookshelves and the big screen that heaven is on everyone's mind. All of us long to know what life after death will be like. Bestselling author John Burke is no exception. For decades, he has been studying accounts of people who have had near-death experiences (NDEs). While not every detail of individual NDEs correlate with Scripture, Burke shows how the common experiences shared by thousands of survivors clearly point to the God of the Bible and the exhilarating picture of heaven he promises. Imagine Heaven is an inspirational journey through the Bible's picture of heaven, colored in with the real-life stories of heaven's wonders. Burke compares gripping stories of NDEs to what Scripture says about our biggest questions of heaven: Will I be myself? Will I see friends and loved ones? What will it look like? What is God like? What will we do forever? What about children and pets? This book will propel readers into an experience that will forever change their view of the life to come and the way they live life today. It also tackles the tough questions of heavenly reward and hellish NDEs. Anyone interested in NDEs or longing to imagine heaven more clearly will enjoy this fascinating and hope-filled book.

In his comprehensive investigation, Strobel doesn't shy away from challenging questions, including: How reliable is the New Testament?Does evidence for Jesus exist outside the Bible? Is Jesus who he said he was?Is there any reason to believe the resurrection was an actual event? What does all of the evidence point to--and what does it mean today? Discover The Case for Christ today. Praise for The Case for Christ: "Nobody knows how to sift truth from fiction like an experienced investigative reporter, or to argue a case like someone trained at Yale Law School. Lee Strobel brings both qualifications to this remarkable book. In addition to his own tremendous testimony as atheist-turned-Christian, the author marshals the irrefutable depositions of recognized "expert witnesses" to build his ironclad case for Jesus Christ. The Case for Christ sets a new standard among existing contemporary apologetics." --D. James Kennedy, PhD, senior minister, Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church

Live No Lies - John Mark Comer

Live No Lies

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The bestselling author of The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry equips readers to recognize and resist the lies that seek to rob them of peace and freedom.   “ Live No Lies is brilliant, deep, scriptural, and will equip you to face the enemy and fight.”—Jennie Allen, New York Times bestselling author of Get Out of Your Head We are at war. Not with a foreign government or domestic terrorists or a creepy new artificial intelligence hell-bent on taking over the world. No, it’s a war we feel deep inside our own chests: we are at war with lies.   The problem isn’t so much that we tell lies but that we live them. We let them into our bodies, and they sabotage our peace. All around us in the culture and deep within our own body memories are lies: deceptive ideas that wreak havoc on our emotional health and spiritual well-being, and deceptive ideas about who God is, who we are, and what the good life truly is.   The choice is not whether to fight or not fight, but whether we win or surrender. Ancient apprentices of Jesus developed a paradigm for this war; they spoke of the three enemies of the soul: the devil, the flesh, and the world. Live No Lies taps into this ancient wisdom from saints of the Way and translates the three enemies for the modern era, with all its secularism and sophistication. As a generation, we chuckle at the devil as a premodern myth, we are confused by Scripture’s teaching on the flesh in an age where sensual indulgence is a virtue not a vice, and we have little to no category for the New Testament concept of the world .   In this provocative and practical book, bestselling author John Mark Comer combines cultural analysis with spiritual formation. He identifies the role lies play in our spiritual de formation and lays out a strategic plan to overcome them.   Do you feel the tug-of-war in your own heart, the inner conflict between truth and lies? The spirit and the flesh? The Way of Jesus and the world? It’s time to start winning. It’s time to live no lies...

The Gospel of Thomas - Thomas the Apostle

The Gospel of Thomas

The Gospel of Thomas (also known as the Coptic Gospel of Thomas) is an extra-canonical sayings gospel. It was discovered near Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in December 1945 among a group of books known as the Nag Hammadi library. Scholars speculate that the works were buried in response to a letter from Bishop Athanasius declaring a strict canon of Christian scripture. Scholars have proposed dates of composition as early as AD 60 and as late as AD 250. Thomas the Apostle  also called Didymus ("twin") was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus according to the New Testament. Thomas is commonly known as "Doubting Thomas" because he doubted Jesus' resurrection when first told of it (as related in the Gospel of John alone); later, he confessed his faith ("My Lord and my God") on seeing Jesus' crucifixion wounds. According to traditional accounts of the Saint Thomas Christians of modern-day Kerala in India, Thomas is believed to have travelled outside the Roman Empire to preach the Gospel, travelling as far as the Malabar Coast which is in modern-day Kerala State, India. According to their tradition, Thomas reached Muziris (modern-day North Paravur and Kodungalloor in Kerala State, India) in AD 52. In 1258, some of the relics were brought to Ortona, in Abruzzo, Italy, where they have been held in the Church of Saint Thomas the Apostle. He is often regarded as the patron saint of India among its Christian adherents, and the name Thomas remains quite popular among the Saint Thomas Christians of India.

Because Jesus Taught It: Christianity Through the Eyes of the Church Fathers - Flame

Because Jesus Taught It: Christianity Through the Eyes of the Church Fathers

In this follow-up to his debut book, GRAMMY®-nominated and Stellar Award-winning hip-hop artist FLAME recounts how various early church fathers influenced his understanding of doctrines, such as justification and the Sacraments, and helped him realize that Lutheran teaching has preserved the teachings of the early church. FLAME uses this argument in his lyrics frequently to show how Lutheranism is not something new or European, but rather reflects the teachings of the earliest Christians. The balance of history, doctrine, and personal experience will help lay Lutherans and non-Lutherans alike appreciate the importance of patristics and the faithfulness of Lutheran theology.

Veracity and Verse - James A. Forbes

Veracity and Verse

The Four Loves - C. S. Lewis

The Four Loves

The Four Loves summarizes four kinds of human love--affection, friendship, erotic love, and the love of God. Masterful without being magisterial, this book's wise, gentle, candid reflections on the virtues and dangers of love draw on sources from Jane Austen to St. Augustine. The chapter on charity (love of God) may be the best thing Lewis ever wrote about Christianity. Consider his reflection on Augustine's teaching that one must love only God, because only God is eternal, and all earthly love will someday pass away: Who could conceivably begin to love God on such a prudential ground--because the security (so to speak) is better? Who could even include it among the grounds for loving? Would you choose a wife or a Friend--if it comes to that, would you choose a dog--in this spirit? One must be outside the world of love, of all loves, before one thus calculates. His description of Christianity here is no less forceful and opinionated than in Mere Christianity or The Problem of Pain , but it is far less anxious about its reader's response--and therefore more persuasive than any of his apologetics. When he begins to describe the nature of faith, Lewis writes: "Take it as one man's reverie, almost one man's myth. If anything in it is useful to you, use it; if anything is not, never give it a second thought." A candid, wise, and warmly personal book in which Lewis explores the possibilities and problems of the four basic kinds of human love- affection, friendship, erotic love, and the love of God. “Immensely worthwhile for its simplicity...a rare and memorable book”. - Sydney J. Harris

The Truth in Jesus - George MacDonald

The Truth in Jesus

This collection of sermons and theological essays by the beloved Victorian author explore the nature of God’s truth and how it is revealed to us.   The Victorian author, poet, and theologian George MacDonald inspired some of the greatest writers of the early 20th century, including C.S. Lewis, who said MacDonald’s books were pivotal in leading him toward Christianity. But while MacDonald’s fiction remains popular—with such notable classics as Robert Falconer and At the Back of the North Wind —his theological nonfiction is often challenging for modern readers.   Now MacDonald scholar and biographer Michael Phillips addresses this difficulty with this expertly edited edition of MacDonald’s sermons and essays about God’s truth. Each selection is accompanied by Phillips’s illuminating commentary, providing readers with an essential road map into the expansive world of George MacDonald’s theological writings.

The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry - John Mark Comer

The Ruthless Elimination of Hurry

ECPA BESTSELLER • A compelling emotional and spiritual case against hurry and in favor of a slower, simpler way of life—from the New York Times bestselling author of Practicing the Way “Prophetic, practical, and profoundly life giving . . . provides a way forward that creates hope, hunger, and a vision of a beautiful life. I consider this required reading.”—Jon Tyson, lead pastor of the Church of the City New York and author of Beautiful Resistance “Who am I becoming?” That was the question nagging pastor and author John Mark Comer. Outwardly, he appeared successful. But inwardly, things weren’t pretty. So he turned to a trusted mentor for guidance and heard these words: “Ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life. Hurry is the great enemy of the spiritual life.” It wasn’t the response he expected, but it was—and continues to be—the answer he needs. Too often we treat the symptoms of toxicity in our modern world instead of trying to pinpoint the cause. A growing number of voices are pointing at hurry, or busyness, as a root of much evil. Within the pages of this book, you’ll find a fascinating roadmap to staying emotionally healthy and spiritually alive in the chaos of the modern world.

Final Events - Nick Redfern

Final Events

For decades, stories of alien abductions, UFO encounters, flying saucer sightings, and Area 51 have led millions of people to believe that extraterrestrials are secretly among us. But what if those millions of people are all wrong? What if the UFO phenomenon has much darker and far more ominous origins?  For four years, UFO authority Nick Redfern has been investigating the strange and terrifying world of a secret group within the U.S. Government known as the Collins Elite. The group believes that our purported alien visitors are, in reality, deceptive demons and fallen angels. They are the minions of Satan, who are reaping and enslaving our very souls, and paving the way for Armageddon and Judgment Day.  In FINAL EVENTS you'll learn about the secret government files on occultists Aleister Crowley and Jack Parsons, and their connections to the UFO mystery; revelations of the demonic link to the famous “UFO crash” at Roswell, New Mexico, in 1947; the disclosure of government investigations into life-after-death and out-of-body experiences; and an examination of the satanic agenda behind alien abductions.  FINAL EVENTS reveals the stark and horrific truths about UFOs that some in the government would rather keep secret.  NICK REDFERN works full-time as an author, lecturer, and journalist. He writes regularly for UFO Magazine, Fate, Fortean Times, and Paranormal Magazine. His previous books include "There’s Something in the Woods," "On the Trail of the Saucer Spies," and "Science Fiction Secrets." Nick has appeared on numerous television shows, including the BBC’s Out of this World; the History Channel’s Monster Quest and UFO Hunters; the National Geographic Channel’s Paranatural; and the SyFy Channel’s Proof Positive. Nick Redfern lives in Arlington, Texas, and can be contacted at nickredfern.com. "If you’re inclined to dismiss the demonic UFO hypothesis and Mr. Redfern’s book, you’d be missing out on what Mr. Redfern does best, and that’s present peripheral information and material that enlightens those who have limited knowledge about things germane to UFOs and human existence itself...The Collins Elite scenario...is an idea that Mr. Redfern presents thoroughly and objectively, as usual. Get the book... and give yourself a treat, one that will be intellectually stimulating in many, many ways." — Rich Reynolds, The UFO Iconoclast(s) "Disturbing stuff. If I were a more cynical kind of guy, I might almost think that [the Collins Elite] was all just another psyops group assigned to create pretexts for overthrowing the Republic. But it certainly fits into the overall secret war against the New Age meme as well...I think Final Events is a book all of us need to read." — Christopher Knowles, The Secret Sun

Boundaries - Henry Cloud & John Townsend

Boundaries

Having clear boundaries is essential to a healthy, balanced lifestyle. A boundary is a personal property line that marks those things for which we are responsible. In other words, boundaries define who we are and who we are not. Boundaries impact all areas of our lives: Physical boundaries help us determine who may touch us and under what circumstances -- Mental boundaries give us the freedom to have our own thoughts and opinions -- Emotional boundaries help us to deal with our own emotions and disengage from the harmful, manipulative emotions of others -- Spiritual boundaries help us to distinguish God's will from our own and give us renewed awe for our Creator -- Often, Christians focus so much on being loving and unselfish that they forget their own limits and limitations. When confronted with their lack of boundaries, they ask: - Can I set limits and still be a loving person? - What are legitimate boundaries? - What if someone is upset or hurt by my boundaries? - How do I answer someone who wants my time, love, energy, or money? - Aren't boundaries selfish? - Why do I feel guilty or afraid when I consider setting boundaries? Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend offer biblically-based answers to these and other tough questions, showing us how to set healthy boundaries with our parents, spouses, children, friends, co-workers, and even ourselves.

Mere Christianity - C. S. Lewis

Mere Christianity

Mere Christianity has sold millions of copies worldwide in over half a century. It is one of the most popular introductions to the Christian faith ever written. This classic brings together C. S. Lewis's legendary broadcast talks from the war years in which he set out to simply "explain and defend the belief that has been common to nearly all Christians at all times." By rejecting the many boundaries that has been dividing Christianity’s many denominations for centuries, Lewis provides an unparalleled opportunity for both believers and unbelievers alike to hear a powerful, rational case for the Christian faith. This book is a collection of sparkling brilliance that is strikingly fresh for the modern reader and at the same time confirms C. S. Lewis’ reputation as one of the foremost writers and thinkers of all time. “If wit and wisdom, style and scholarship are requisites to passage through the pearly gates, Mr. Lewis will be among the angels.” - THE NEW YORKER “Lewis is the ideal persuader for the half-convinced, for the good man who would like to be a Christian but finds his intellect getting in the way.” - NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW “It is not surprising that Lewis’s time-proven views are still flourishing while most other mid-20th-century works are nearly neglected.” - WALL STREET JOURNAL “C. S. Lewis understood, like few in the past century, just how deeply faith is both imaginative and rational.” - CHRISTIANITY TODAY

Seven Days That Divide the World - John C. Lennox

Seven Days That Divide the World

What did the writer of Genesis mean by “the first day”? Is it a literal week or a series of time periods? If I believe that the earth is 4.5 billion years old, am I denying the authority of Scripture? In response to the continuing controversy over the interpretation of the creation narrative in Genesis, John Lennox proposes a succinct method of reading and interpreting the first chapters of Genesis without discounting either science or Scripture. With examples from history, a brief but thorough exploration of the major interpretations, and a look into the particular significance of the creation of human beings, Lennox suggests that Christians can heed modern scientific knowledge while staying faithful to the biblical narrative. He moves beyond a simple response to the controversy, insisting that Genesis teaches us far more about the God of Jesus Christ and about God’s intention for creation than it does about the age of the earth. With this book, Lennox offers a careful yet accessible introduction to a scientifically-savvy, theologically-astute, and Scripturally faithful interpretation of Genesis.

Gentle and Lowly - Dane Ortlund

Gentle and Lowly

Pastor Dane Ortlund Explores Jesus's Heart to Reveal His Tender Love for Sinners and Sufferers  Christians know that God loves them, but can easily feel that he is perpetually disappointed and frustrated, maybe even close to giving up on them. As a result, they focus a lot—and rightly so—on what Jesus has done to appease God's wrath for sin. But how does Jesus Christ actually feel about his people amid all their sins and failures?  This book draws us to Matthew 11, where Jesus describes himself as "gentle and lowly in heart," longing for his people to find rest in him. The gospel flows from God's deepest heart for his people, a heart of tender love for the sinful and suffering.  These chapters take us into the depths of Christ's very heart for sinners, diving deep into Bible passages that speak of who Christ is and encouraging readers with the affections of Christ for his people. His longing heart for sinners comforts and sustains readers in their up-and-down lives.  Draws on Writings from the Puritans:  Including Thomas Goodwin, Richard Sibbes, John Bunyan, John Owen, and others  Provides a Unique Perspective:  Confronts readers' typical thoughts on God's heart Scripture-Based:  Explores passages throughout the whole Bible to get a full picture of God's heart for sinners
