JFODS4: The Joint Forces Operations & Doctrine SMARTbook, 4th Ed.

JFODS4: The Joint Forces Operations & Doctrine SMARTbook, 4th Ed.

JFODS4: The Joint Forces Operations & Doctrine SMARTbook, 4th Ed. is the fourth revised edition of The Joint Forces Operations & Doctrine SMARTbook, designed for use by ALL SERVICES and JOINT FORCES across the tactical, operational and strategic levels of war. In addition to JP 3-0 Joint Operations (Aug ‘11) and JP 5-0 Joint Operation Planning (Aug ‘11), JFODS4 incorporates the full scope of new material from JP 1 Doctrine for the Armed Forces of the United States (Mar ‘13), JP 3-08 Interorganizational Coordination During Joint Operations (Jun ‘11), JP 3-13 Information Operations (Nov ‘14), JP 3-16 Multinational Operations (Jul ‘13), JP 3-33 Joint Task Force Headquarters (Jun ‘12), JP 3-60 Joint Targeting (Jan ‘13), and JP 4-0 Joint Logistics (Oct ‘13). The nature of the challenges to the United States and its interests demand that the Armed Forces operate as a fully integrated joint team across the range of military operations. The synergy that results from the integration and synchronization of Service components’ capabilities under a single joint force commander maximizes the effectiveness and efficiency of the force. Military operations vary in scope, purpose, and conflict intensity across a range that extends from military engagement, security cooperation, and deterrence activities to crisis response and limited contingency operations and, if necessary, to major operations and campaigns. Joint operation planning consists of planning activities associated with joint military operations by combatant commanders and their subordinate joint force commanders in response to contingencies and crises. Achieving national strategic objectives requires effective unified action resulting in unity of effort -- to include interagency, intergovernmental, nongovernmental and multinational partners. This is accomplished by collaboration, synchronization, and coordination in the use of the diplomatic, informational, military, and economic instruments of national power. Feeding the Mind

Feeding the Mind

New mental perspectives on familiar things. Carroll presents a metaphor between feeding and reading which is both entertaining and enlightening. It's interesting as well to notice similarities between his idea of the brain needing a few minutes to "digest" and currently popular techniques like Pomodoro.

The Art of Money Getting

The Art of Money Getting

In this book the reader will learn about 21 golden rules for making money. “Those who really desire to attain an independence, have only to set their minds upon it, and adopt the proper means, as they do in regard to any other object which they wish to accomplish, and the thing is easily done. But however easy it may be found to make money, I have no doubt many of my hearers will agree it is the most difficult thing in the world to keep it. The road to wealth is, as Dr. Franklin truly says, "as plain as the road to the mill." It consists simply in expending less than we earn; that seems to be a very simple problem. “

To Grieve Or Not to Grieve?: The Unsteady Representation of Violence in Ivo Andric's the Bridge on the Drina (Report)

To Grieve Or Not to Grieve?: The Unsteady Representation of Violence in Ivo Andric's the Bridge on the Drina (Report)

In the four-hundred-year time-span of Ivo Andric's The Bridge on the Drina, the reader is confronted with abundant incidences of violence. From the beginnings of the bridge to its final fragmentation, blood and suffering are the faithful companions of life in Visegrad. Though Andric asserts the significance of ordinary life on the bridge--the daily gatherings of townspeople and the lengthy conversations on the kapia--violent acts frequently disturb the flow of this life. So much so, that one might say that violence, in all of its colorful manifestations, is one of several persistent themes that forge conceptual cohesion within Andric's seemingly fragmentary narrative. (1) As it chronicles the history of Visegrad, The Bridge on the Drina also recounts a history of violence. Despite these frequent displays of brutal violence, Andric scholars have argued that in The Bridge on the Drina (and in many of Andric's works) individual victimization is not significantly mourned. Gordana Crnkovic argues that since the individual is given little weight in the epic scope of Andric's novel-chronicle, when he or she perishes, it is always possible to find consolation in the ongoing life of humanity and the eternity of art. "Specific destinies and tragedies, narrated in detail," writes Crnkovic, "lose their weight under the sheer scope of the historical novel." (2) Through a poetics of "minimizing and displacing," Andric's historical novels--as opposed to some of his earlier works such as Ex Ponto and Unrest--do not take stock of individual destiny, and grow oblivious of individual victimization in the seamless eternity of the human species.

The Unauthorized Dan Brown Companion

The Unauthorized Dan Brown Companion

The definitive truth within Dan Brown's fantastic fiction—revealed at last. With millions of copies of his books in print, a major motion picture based on The Da Vinci Code in theaters, and religious leaders everywhere launching scathing attacks on his work, Dan Brown is, quite simply, a phenomenon. His novels, intricate mosaics combining well-researched facts with action-packed storytelling, have created their own industry of location tours, seminars—even PBS specials. But perhaps the one thing that still keeps his readers guessing is that nagging question: How much of this is true? The Unauthorized Dan Brown Companion tells all. Unlike the avalanche of books specifically about The Da Vinci Code , The Unauthorized Dan Brown Companion covers all of Dan Brown's books and, crucially, has no religious agenda or political axe to grind—these are the facts. • Could there actually be an unbreakable code that would cripple US intelligence, as in Digital Fortress? • How much truth lies in The Da Vinci Code's history-altering propositions that have so angered the Vatican? • Are the Illuminati from Angels and Demons really alive and well? The answers are here, covering every picture, place, proper name, and historical event through all of Brown's books, explaining what's absolutely true, possible, improbable, or completely fictitious. One of Dan Brown's greatest accomplishments as a writer is his uncanny ability to blur the line between fact and fiction. Now, with The Unauthorized Dan Brown Companion, readers will at last have all of the information to distinguish for themselves between the inventions of a master storyteller and the historical revelations of a first-rate investigator. John Helfers is a full-time writer and editor currently living on Green Bay, Wisconsin. He is the co-editor of The Valdemar Companion, a guide to the work and life of fantasy writer Mercedes Lackey. Recent published books include two anthologies he edited, In the Shadow of Evil and Slipstreams. He has also written nonfiction, with his history of the United States Navy, The Alpha Bravo Delta Guide to the U.S. Navy, published in 2003.

Deep work

Deep work

Tracing Your Family History on the Internet

Tracing Your Family History on the Internet

A genealogist’s practical guide to researching family history online while avoiding inaccurate, incomplete, or misleading information.   The internet has revolutionized family history research—every day new records and resources are placed online and new methods of sharing research and communicating become available. Never before has it been so easy to research family history and to gain a better understanding of who we are and where we came from.   But, as British genealogist Chris Paton demonstrates in this straightforward, practical guide, while the internet is an enormous asset, it is also something to be wary of. Researchers need to take a cautious approach to the information they acquire on the web. Where did the original material come from? Has it been accurately reproduced? Why was it put online? What has been left out and what is still to come?   As he leads researchers through the multitude of resources that are now accessible online with an emphasis on UK and Ireland sites, Chris Paton helps to answer these questions. He shows what the internet can and cannot do—and he warns against the various traps researchers can fall into along the way.
