The author was in kindergarten when a teacher saw him trying to look out the window at the fire trucks. The author ended up hitting his head on the radiator below the window, causing him to lose a lot of blood and necessitating a hospital visit.

The author grew up in Westchester County, a suburb of New York City. One night, when the author was nine, he went on a bike ride around his neighborhood to look for the X-Men school. He thought if he could locate it, he would find in that school a place where he finally fit in.
