Introduction

The region of modern Ukraine has a long and diversified history. For much of its history, Ukraine endured turmoil while its lands and people were partitioned by other nations. Yet even under Soviet rule, the Ukrainian people continued to foster their national identity and culture. Now, after more than 20 years of independence, Ukraine is slowly rising to its potential as a powerful nation.
