Roop Rathore (Shah Rukh Khan) is a singer in Bombay, just like his now ailing father (Anupam Kher) was before him. A love triangle emerges when, while singing at Ajay Narang's (Naseeruddin Shah) hotel, Ajay's sister Reshma (Ramya Krishnan) falls in love with him, however, he is in love with a doctor named Pooja (Pooja Bhatt). Pooja and Roop get married and this causes a frustrated Reshma to devise many plans to make their life miserable, with the help of her brother. Eventually, Roop's father is killed by Ajay when Roop tries to save Pooja.
