The narrator and her husband John rent a country estate for the summer. John orders the narrator to rest as much as possible to cure her depression and obeys her husband with reluctance. She decides to write during her stay but her family forbids it. Having no emotional support and left alone in her room she becomes obsessed with the wallpaper and is convinced there is someone trapped in it.
