The Expats

The Expats

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • From the renowned author of The Accident, “a pulse-pounding spy novel mixed with the delicate dissection of a marriage” (USA Today)

“Smart, clever suspense, skillfully plotted, and a lot of fun to read.”—John Grisham

EDGAR AWARD WINNER • ANTHONY AWARD WINNER

Can we ever escape our secrets?

In the cobblestoned streets of Luxembourg, Kate Moore’s days are filled with playdates and coffee mornings, her weekends spent in Paris and skiing in the Alps. But Kate is also guarding a tremendous, life-defining secret—one that’s become so unbearable that it begins to unravel her newly established expat life. She suspects that another American couple are not who they claim to be; her husband is acting suspiciously; and as she travels around Europe, she finds herself looking over her shoulder, increasingly terrified that her own past is catching up with her. As Kate beings to dig, to uncover the secrets of the people around her, she finds herself buried in layers of deceit so thick they threaten her family, her marriage, and her life.

Hailed by The New York Times as “smartly executed [and] thoroughly captivating,” The Expats proves Chris Pavone to be a writer of tremendous talent.

  • Intriguing

Swell written story of spies and lies and true love. The story was exciting and surprising from start to end.

  • Until the Last Paragraph

Until the Last Paragraph I did not know the outcome. An excellent read.

  • Chronology Issues

I enjoyed the read, but it was very hard for me to keep track of the chronology of the story. I had to go back many times and re-read chapters. I believe that the time line could have been better organized.

  • Why does this guy have a career?

One of the worst screenplays/books I think I've ever tried to read. The writing is so middle-grade dull and bad, the story so utterly stupid it just boggles the mind that this pos ever got published. If this is what readers find entertaining, then the rest of us who write good books should just give up because there’s no competing with peurile writing and storylines like this. It doesn’t even count as pure entertainment because of the preponderance of one-dimensional characters and the overabundance of cliches. Just…ugh. Long on bad sentences and just plain long.

  • Pointless, boring and poorly structured

Could have used an editor. I finished it just because I am compulsive but if you are really expecting something on lines of Le Carre you will be disappointed. The closest thing to spy raft here is the protagonist walking on a window ledge. The remaining 9/10th of the book is comprised of an extremely 1 dimensional character struggling to cope with being a housewife.
