Asking for Trouble
Take one high-flying, forties-loving heiress looking for her missing sister, add one hardboiled private detective who has his feet planted firmly in this century, add a priceless stolen sculpture, blackmail, disorganized crime, organized gangsters, and a very rich father, and you have the makings of a very bad day for two people who have nothing in common.
Sally MacArthur is desperate to find her kidnapped sister, so desperate that she hires James Diamond, even though he’s all business and thinks she’s seen too many Humphrey Bogart movies.
James knows he should turn down the job—Sally has trouble written all over her—but there’s something about the case that’s making it impossible for him to say no. And there’s something about Sally, too, although he never gets involved with a client. That kind of stuff is for the movies, not real life.
A chase through Northern California wasn’t what he had in mind, particularly since he can’t keep that mind off his troublesome employer. But a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do. And Sally MacArthur is just too tempting.
