He Who Gets Slapped

He Who Gets Slapped

He Who Gets Slapped, first performed in 1915, is Leonid Andreyev’s powerful psychological drama about humiliation, identity, and redemption. The play centers on a man who, after personal betrayal, joins a circus and becomes a clown known as “He” whose act is to be repeatedly slapped. Beneath the spectacle lies a haunting story of lost honor and emotional scars. Andreyev explores the tragedy of the human condition with symbolic richness and raw emotion. The play was internationally acclaimed and became the basis for a landmark silent film in 1924.
