The Land of Midian — Volume 1

The Land of Midian — Volume 1

Throughout the summer of 1877 I was haunted by memories of mysterious Midian. The Golden Region appeared to me in the glow of primaeval prosperity described by the Egyptian hieroglyphs; as rich in agriculture and in fertility, according to the old Hellenic travellers, as in its Centres of civilization, and in the precious metals catalogued by the Sacred Books of the Hebrews.

...und Tschüss

...und Tschüss

Jedes Jahr wandern weit über 140 000 Deutsche aus. Warum?

Travels With Myself

Travels With Myself

Travels With Myself is a dazzling collection of selected writings by bestselling travel writer and novelist, Tahir Shah. Written over twenty years, the pieces form an eclectic treasury of stories from Latin America, Asia, Africa, and beyond. Some consider the lives of women in society - both in East and West. The women-only police stations of Brazil, for instance, as well as the female inmates waiting to die on America's death row, or the young widows who clear landmines for a living in northern Cambodia.More still consider Morocco, where Shah and his family resided for many years in a mansion set squarely in the middle of a sprawling Casablanca shantytown. Yet more reflect on the oddities and contradictions of the modern world, such as why, in India each summer, hundreds of thousands line up to swallow live fish; or how the Model T Ford sounded the death knell of lavish Edwardian ostrich-feather hats.Regarded as a brilliantly original writer, Tahir Shah has gained a worldwide following by perceiving the lands through which he travels with a lens honed to detail. Questioning everything he observes, Shah taps down to a bedrock of wonder which most writers and travellers don't even realize exists.

Vatican City

Vatican City

Learn about the history of The Vatican in Rome with iMinds Travel's insightful fast knowledge series. Although a tiny city- state, the Vatican City boasts many cultural and religious gems in its small boundaries. It’s famous for being the smallest country in the world, at less than 50 hectares, or 120 acres. And its permanent population is less than 1000 people. But it is home to the Sistine Chapel, St Peter’s Basilica, ten museums and many lush gardens! And as the world centre of the Roman Catholic Church, the Vatican is a place of enormous interest to pilgrims and art lovers the world over. The Vatican City sits comfortably inside the city of Rome and exists solely as a Catholic hub. Pope Symmachus was the first to establish a fixed papal residence in the Vatican in about 500. And since 1377 it has been the pope’s official residence. Governed by different laws, the Vatican has always been set apart from the rest of Italy. And it was granted its status as an independent state in 1929, after 68 years of leaders trying unsuccessfully to incorporate it into the Kingdom of Italy. Benito Mussolini gave Pope Pius XI authority over the Vatican City and today the pope is still in charge. The Vatican City is considered a theocracy. This means that God is recognised as the supreme ruler. iMinds will tell you the story behind the place with its innovative travel series, transporting the armchair traveller or getting you in the mood for discover on route to your destination. iMinds brings targeted knowledge to your eReading device with short information segments  to whet your mental appetite and broaden your mind.

Slipping into Paradise

Slipping into Paradise

In the tradition of Under the Tuscan Sun and A Year in Provence, here is Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson’s ode to his personal paradise–his adopted home, New Zealand. After living in California, why did Masson settle– out of all the places on earth–in such a faraway land? It turns out that while visiting a beautiful sandy beach just fifteen minutes from bustling Auckland, Masson and his family were utterly seduced by the exotic locale. There was little deliberation. This place, surrounded by lush forest on a bay dotted with volcanic islands, would be their new home.Masson takes readers on a remarkable journey to another world, as he and his family “slip into” the paradise that is New Zealand. For anyone who has ever dreamed of finding utopia, Masson reveals a country where neighbors talk to one another and provide a sense of real community–rarely, outside of the big cities, locking their doors–and where politics are as mellow as the weather. New Zealand is also a land of spectacular scenery, made even more famous for being the shooting location for the Lord of the Rings films. The flora is plentiful. Mangroves, banana plants, papaya trees, and more than ten thousand species of ferns grow wild and freely. The fauna is benign. There are no snakes, tarantulas, or scorpions. Children can walk to school barefoot without a care– there is nothing to sting them, bite them, or give them a rash. In the blue waters near the lush coastline, dolphins and orcas abound. While describing his love affair with the country and his affinity for its citizens, Masson reflects on the meaning of home, the importance of acting on intuition, and what happens when we lose our connection to the place we live in. Responding to an impulse, Masson reveals, he realized a dream.Featuring a its glossary of phrases used by New Zealanders and important Maori words, as well as the author’s recommended travel itinerary, Slipping into Paradise is ideal for anyone planning a visit to this exquisite land. Full of photographs, delightful anecdotes, and little-known facts (jogging, for example, was invented in New Zealand), Slipping into Paradise is also a book for those who fantasize about dramatically changing their lives–and who imagine something better for themselves. Jeffrey Masson’s message: New Zealand awaits.

Have Underwear Will Travel

Have Underwear Will Travel

Imagine that you were so bored with your job that you decided to quit and take off to drive across the United States. Imagine for a minute that before you quit you were so bored that to fill your time you spread chocolate into used underwear and left it behind in public places for people to find. That's what Chris Miller decided to do wheen he quit his management job in 2001. What follows is a look at America from the bathroom stalls and the road, from behind dozens of pairs of fake soiled underwear. Performance art or juvenile prank? You be the judge.

Hey Ranger 2

Hey Ranger 2

In this sequel to the wildly successful Hey Ranger: True Tales of Humor and Misadventure from America's National Parks, former ranger Jim Burnett casts his net globally in search of the most outrageous and humorous stories of man in his eternal quest to experience the natural world. Burnett tells of campers being belted by mysterious objects falling from the sky, like potatoes and ice cream; wildlife photos that went awry, including a ground squirrel that outwits a photographer; dumb crooks in parks, such as the drunk driver who mistakenly knocked on a judge's door to report an accident; and drivers who went over the hill and into the woods instead of to Grandma's house.Burnett also assembles contenders for the strangest questions ever asked of a park ranger, lessons on how not to pick a campsite, life lessons you can learn from a canoe trip, as well as some classic bear stories. As always, Burnett's stories are meant to inform as well as entertain, and serve as cautionary tales on how not to become "a victim of your vacation." Told in Burnett's classic, conversational style, Hey Ranger 2 will not disappoint.

Exmoor National Park (Slow Travel)

Exmoor National Park (Slow Travel)

This new title in Bradt's distinctive series of Slow travel guides to regions of Britain is the only general guide to focus exclusively on Exmoor, covering all of the national park plus towns and villages just outside the boundary. Written by expert resident author Hilary Bradt, coast and moorland, hiking, wildlife and birdwatching are all covered, as are food and drink, historical background and culture both present and past, including Lorna Doone (and Doone country), Wordsworth and Shelley. Divided into ten regions and complete with 13 walks with maps, Bradt's Slow Travel Exmoor National Park also covers National Trust villages and nature reserves, little-known attractions such as private gardens, and the region's most interesting little churches. Exmoor is one of England's smallest but most beautiful national parks and is also particularly rich in festivals, both cultural, traditional - and frankly bizarre, including Hunting of the Earl of Rone in the village of Combe Martin and the Minehead Hobby Horse. The area is also increasingly recognised as a foodie destination and as a place for active holidays of all types. With its long coastline there are beaches for everyone, both sand and pebble, with wild swimming in the sea, rivers and reservoirs. This is also one of the most rewarding areas for walking in the West Country, combining stunning sections of the South West Coast Path with inland walks over heather-rich moorland and up river valleys. England's smallest church and largest number of wild red deer, and Britain's most distinctive native pony are all found here. Ideal for walkers, riders, foodies and lovers of beautiful scenery and wilderness, Bradt's Slow Travel Exmoor National Park is the essential companion for a successful trip regardless of age or budget.

Berlin

Berlin

A Quiet Evening

A Quiet Evening

Collected here, from a period of nearly five decades, are thirty-six of Norman Lewis's best articles. In each, his writing crackles with poker-faced wit and stylistic brilliance. As a witness to his times – the good, the bad and the absurd – he was unmatched, and his instinct for important events, and moments, was infallible. His range here includes Ibizan fishermen, an interview with Castro's executioner, the genocide of the South American indigenous tribes, a paean to Seville and his meeting with a tragic Ernest Hemingway. Lewis told Ian Fleming, who had commissioned him, that the meeting was 'a shattering experience of the kind likely to sabotage ambition'. Fortunately it didn't, and the articles assembled between these covers are compulsive, hilarious, tender and beautifully written, at times deeply upsetting and always unforgettable.
