Karl Marx war ein deutscher Philosoph, Ökonom, Gesellschaftstheoretiker, politischer Journalist, Historiker, Protagonist der Arbeiterbewegung sowie Kritiker des Kapitalismus und der Religion. Die theoretischen Grundlagen des nach Marx benannten Marxismus beeinflussen die Diskurse der Geschichtswissenschaft und Soziologie wie auch der Wirtschafts- und Politikwissenschaft bis in die Gegenwart. Mit Friedrich Engels begründete er den "historischen Materialismus" und wurde zum einflussreichsten Theoretiker des Sozialismus und Kommunismus, deren Grundzüge die beiden in der programmatischen Schrift Manifest der Kommunistischen Partei (1848) niederlegten. Als Marx' Hauptwerk gilt Das Kapital, dessen erster Band noch zu seinen Lebzeiten im Jahr 1867 erschien; die beiden folgenden Bände wurden posthum von Engels herausgegeben. Einflussreich waren auch seine politischen Aktivitäten in der entstehenden internationalen Arbeiterbewegung (Internationale Arbeiterassoziation), in der er zeitweise eine intellektuelle Führungsrolle übernahm. Friedrich Engels war ein deutscher Philosoph, Gesellschaftstheoretiker, Historiker, Journalist und kommunistischer Revolutionär. Er entwickelte gemeinsam mit Karl Marx die heute als Marxismus bezeichnete Gesellschafts- und Wirtschaftstheorie. Die Gefahr eines Weltkriegs in Europa sah er deutlich voraus und versuchte noch 1893 mit einer Artikelserie im Vorwärts einen Anstoß zur Reduzierung der stehenden Heere zu geben. Mit seiner einflussreichen Untersuchung Die Lage der arbeitenden Klasse in England (1845) gehörte Engels zu den Pionieren der empirischen Soziologie. Seine publizistische Tätigkeit trug wesentlich zur Verbreitung des Marxismus bei. Nach Marx' Tod 1883 gab Engels den zweiten und den dritten Band von dessen Hauptwerk, Das Kapital. Stefan Zweig was born on November 28, 1881, in Vienna, and is one of the most important European authors of the first half of the 20th century. A Jew, he was persecuted by the Nazis and forced into exile. His final home was in Brazil, where he met a tragic end. A versatile writer, Zweig dedicated himself to almost all literary activities and, in addition to novellas, also became famous as a historian and biographer. His biography of Maria Antonieta was an absolute success. By the end of 1932, just a few months after its release, the rights had already been sold for 14 editions in different languages. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer paid a sum for the copyrights that would allow him to take two years off work, and thus the work also became an authentic success at the box office.

L’auteur se garde bien de répondre; il propose des pistes, a recours à l’histoire familiale, aux anecdotes remâchées et transmises comme un héritage qui tiendrait dans un baluchon, aux souvenirs des unes et des autres, de certaines cousines qui auraient pu saisir les secrets féminins de cette mère aimée mais discrète. Chemin faisant, l’auteur arrive aux sources de lui-même, de sa propre psyché, de sa propre carrière. Il dit avec humilité et honnêteté comme son métier «d’homme de lettres» était loin de sa mère et n’était pas pour rien dans la fierté qu’elle avait de lui. Tout se passe comme s’il découvrait la littérature en même temps que le désir (ou le désir à travers la littérature) et qu’une pudeur alors s’immisce entre mère et fils.
