This is a biographical book. Wherever English literature is studied, John Dryden is recognized as the author of some of the greatest political satires in the language. Until recently the fact has been overlooked that before he wrote the first of these satires, Absalom and Achitophel, he had entered the political arena with the prose tract here reproduced. The proof that the Historiographer Royal contributed to the anti-Whig propaganda of the spring of 1681 depends partly on contemporary or near-contemporary statements but principally on internal evidence. An article by Professor Roswell G. Ham (The Review of English Studies, XI (1935), 284-98; Hugh Macdonald, John Dryden, A Bibliography, p. 167) demonstrated Dryden's authorship so satisfactorily that it is unnecessary to set forth here the arguments that established this thesis. The time when Dryden was composing his defence of the royal Declaration is approximately fixed from the reference to it on June 22, 1681, in The Observator, which had noted the Whig pamphlet Dryden was answering under the date of May 26.

Chi è il tuo maestro? Giovanni Testori, scrittore, drammaturgo, pittore e critico d’arte, non aveva dubbi su chi fosse il suo: Roberto Longhi, forse il più grande critico d’arte del Novecento. Lo testimoniano, una dopo l’altra, le 62 lettere inviate al maestro lungo i vent’anni della loro amicizia, dall’incontro alla mostra milanese di Caravaggio nel 1951 fino al 1969, a pochi mesi dalla scomparsa di Longhi. Un rapporto che non si sarebbe interrotto nei decenni seguenti, come documentano i numerosi articoli e interventi di Testori dedicati a lui e alla moglie Anna Banti, riproposti o pubblicati per la prima volta in questo volume. Dalle lettere emergono i dettagli delle fasi di lavorazione dei saggi per la rivista “Paragone” e delle mostre curate da Testori in quegli anni. Longhi veniva interpellato per la scelta delle opere, a conferma o meno dell’attribuzione dei dipinti, per correggere testi e schede in catalogo. Ma sono di grande rilievo anche i suggerimenti riguardanti romanzi e racconti. Purtroppo, sono andate perdute le lettere di Longhi a Testori, ma nei commenti se ne evince il contenuto, ricostruendo i riferimenti a fatti e nomi di un contesto culturale vivacissimo. S’incontrano così alcune personalità determinanti per l’arte e la critica del Novecento, come Francesco Arcangeli, Carlo Volpe, Renato Guttuso ed Ennio Morlotti, ma anche figure chiave della letteratura e dell’editoria italiana di quegli anni quali Giulio Einaudi, Elio Vittorini, Italo Calvino, Giorgio Bassani e Anna Banti.
