L'étranger est par essence louche, suspect, imprévisible, retors, de taille à commettre des avanies, même s'il survit dans le plus profond dénuement, s'il souffre de la faim, du froid, qu'il n'a pas de toit pour se protéger. L'étranger, homme, femme ou enfant, représente toujours un danger, qu'il faut combattre à tout prix. La loi dispose que " toute personne qui aura, par aide directe ou indirecte, facilité ou tenté de faciliter l'entrée, la circulation ou le séjour irrégulier d'un étranger en France " encourt jusqu'à 5 ans d'emprisonnement et 30 000 euros d'amende. Curtis (1868-1952) a immortalisé à travers ses photos l'univers des Indiens d'Amérique et son oeuvre gigantesque est aujourd'hui mondialement reconnue.Journaliste au New York Times, récompensé par le prix Pulitzer et le National Book Award, Timothy Egan nous fait partager la formidable aventure artistique, ethnologique et humaine à laquelle Curtis consacra toute sa vie et pour laquelle il a tout sacrifié.Havasupais du Grand Canyon, Pueblos, Blackfeets, Cheyennes, Arapahos, Yakimas ou encore Salishans : pendant près de trente ans, Curtis a parcouru le continent à la rencontre de plus de 80 tribus alors largement méconnues, faisant preuve de persévérance pour gagner leur confiance.
