Joan Didion:The Last Interview

Joan Didion:The Last Interview

The iconic writer whose prose was as influential and as it is unmistakably hers is joined in conversation with Sheila Heti, Hilton Als, Dave Eggers, Hari Kunzru and many more. Some writers define a generation. Some a genre. Joan Didion did both, and much more. Didion rose to prominence with her nonfiction collection, Slouching Towards Bethlehem, and she quickly became the writer who captured the zeitgeist of the washed-out, acid hangover of the 60s. But as a bicoastal writer of fiction and nonfiction whose writing ranged from personal essays and raw, intimate memoirs to reportage on international affairs and social justice, Didion is much harder to pin down than her reputation might suggest.  This collection encompasses it all, in conversations that delve into her underappreciated mid-career works, her influences, the loss of her husband and daughter, and her most infamous essays. Far from the evasive, terse minimalist that has come to dominate the image of Joan Didion, what this collection reveals is a warm, thoughtful woman whose well earned legacy promises to live on for readers and writers for many generations to come.

A Déli-sark foglyai

A Déli-sark foglyai

Éreztem közben a süvítő szél metsző hidegét, hallottam a jég ropogását, a hajótest utolsó reccsenéseit… Szinte közönyösen fogadták a vereséget. Túlságosan ki voltak merülve, semhogy keseregjenek rajta.A hatalmas külső erő lassan zúzta szét a hajótestet; nem egyszerre, hanem apránként törte össze. Ahogy az oldalának feszülő tízmillió tonnányi jég egyre jobban behorpasztotta, a haldokló hajó zokogva panaszolta fájdalmát. Bordái, eresztékei, roppant gerendái (köztük majdnem emberderék-vastagságúak is) recsegtek-ropogtak a kérlelhetetlenül fokozódó nyomás alatt, míg végül megadták magukat, és sortűzszerű ropogással elpattantak. Frank Wild másodparancsnok bedugta a fejét a legénységi hálóba. – Vége, fiúk – mondta halkan. – Ideje szedelődzködni.”

George Harrison

George Harrison

From the premiere Beatles biographer—author of the New York Times bestseller John Lennon: The Life and the million-copy selling Shout!: The Beatles in Their Generation—a rare and revealing portrait of George Harrison, the most misunderstood and mysterious Beatle, based on decades-long research and unparalleled access to inside sources.Despite being hailed as one of the best guitarists of his era, George Harrison, particularly in his early decades, battled feelings of inferiority. He was often the butt of jokes from his bandmates owing to his lower-class background and, typically, was allowed to contribute only one or two songs per Beatles album out of the dozens he wrote. Now, acclaimed Beatles biographer Philip Norman examines Harrison through the lens of his numerous self-contradictions. Compared to songwriting luminaries John Lennon and Paul McCartney he was considered a minor talent, yet he composed such masterpieces as “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” and “Here Comes the Sun,” and his solo debut album “All Things Must Pass” achieved enormous success, appearing on many lists of the 100 best rock albums ever. Modern music critics place him in the pantheon of sixties guitar gods alongside Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Keith Richards, and Jimmy Page. Harrison railed against the material world yet wrote the first pop song complaining about income tax. He spent years lovingly restoring his Friar Park estate as a spiritual journey, but quickly mortgaged the property to help rescue a film project that would be widely banned as sacrilegious, Monty Python’s Life of Brian. Harrison could be fiercely jealous, but not only did he stay friends with Eric Clapton when Clapton fell in love with Harrison’s wife, Pattie Boyd, the two men grew even closer after Clapton walked away with her. Unprecedented in scope and filled with numerous color photos, this rich biography captures George Harrison at his most multi-faceted: devoted friend, loyal son, master guitar player, brilliant songwriter, cocaine addict, serial philanderer, global philanthropist, student of Indian mysticism, self-deprecating comedian, and, ultimately, iconic artist and man beloved by millions.

Romain Rolland

Romain Rolland

Romain Rolland was born on January 29, 1866, a year of strife, the year when Sadowa was fought. His native town was Clamecy, where another imaginative writer, Claude Tillier, author ofMon Oncle Benjamin, was likewise born. An ancient city, within the confines of old-time Burgundy, Clamecy is a quiet place, where life is easy and uneventful. The Rollands belong to a highly respected middle-class family. His father, who was a lawyer, was one of the notables of the town. His mother, a pious and serious-minded woman, devoted all her energies to the upbringing of her two children; Romain, a delicate boy, and his sister Madeleine, younger than he.

Ana M. How They Succeeded

How They Succeeded

There is a beautiful romance in this book, a romance with achievement in an age when achievement was valued. It can happen again, and a good first step is to study the lives and values of the greats of the last century to learn how and why. The Gilded Age produced not only some of the richest men and women of all time; its freedom and opportunities built a nation of people of superlative character. This fantastic book from 1901 provides an in-depth look at the lives and choices of some of the most famous among them. The idea is to document the traits that make for great entrepreneurs. Here it is presented with beautiful personal profiles. From the interviews and reporting, certain common features of success emerge: the need for a work ethic, the necessity of sacrifice, the role of being alert, the centrality of passion to success, the urge to serve others, the desire to break the mold, the willingness to adapt to change, profound attentiveness to real conditions, and also the biographical details of how a person goes from rags to riches. Capitalistic success is heralded in these pages. But it's not only about money. It's about success in every field, so poets, dancers, composers, philanthropists, and journalists are in here. But the common thread here is entrepreneurship, which is that special capacity for acting on good judgments about an uncertain future. This quality is the driving force of the market and civilization. You will find out more about these people through these bite-size reports by top-flight journalists than from full biographies. You get to hear their own words about how they evaluate their success. It's a great book for kids too, offering unforgettable life stories and lessons.

Commentaries on the Gallic War

Commentaries on the Gallic War

Commentaries on the Gallic War describes the conflicts between Rome and the region of Gaul in western Europe, as well as the Germanic peoples who lived to the east of the river Rhine, and Britain to the north, in the later years of the Roman republic.Despite being written in the 3rd person, the commentaries are the memoirs of Julius Caesar himself, and offer a unique insight into these events. Before the Gallic war began, the Romans had already conquered the region known as Provincia Nostra (literally: “our province”), which is now Languedoc and Provence in the south of France.Julius Caesar had been one of the two consuls elected in the year 59 . The consuls held the highest political office in the Roman republic, but their terms only lasted a year. When his consulship came to an end, Caesar retained power through the position of proconsul, governing Provincia Nostra and two other provinces. This provided Caesar with the necessary command to conduct the military campaigns in Gaul.Caesar’s victories in Gaul had huge repercussions on the future of Rome: the related work, Commentaries on the Civil War, documents the ensuing conflict between Caesar and Pompey that ultimately led to the end of the Roman republic and the beginning of the Roman empire.

The Fight

The Fight

The Ultimate H.P. Blavatsky Collection

The Ultimate H.P. Blavatsky Collection

Includes: •Charles River Editors original biography of H.P. Blavatksy •Blavatsky’s classics The Secret Doctrine and Isis Unveiled Among the New Age Movement and modern spiritualists, one name stands above the rest: Helena Petrovna (H.P.) Blavatsky. Blavatsky is best known today for co-founding the Theosophical School, a religious school of thought that she labeled "the archaic Wisdom-Religion, the esoteric doctrine once known in every ancient country having claims to civilization”, and nobody was more qualified than Blavatsky to forge such a creation. During her second marriage, Blavatsky traveled to various parts of the world, including Egypt, France, Germany, Mexico, South America, Canada, and India, absorbing all the diverse cultures, customs, religions, and philosophies she came across.  Once she had extensively studied all of the different movements she had experienced, Blavatsky went about synthesizing Theosophy and creating a worldview that offered explanations for the origin, workings and ultimate fate of every aspect of mankind’s existence, in order to “form a nucleus of the Universal Brotherhood of Humanity, without distinction of race, creed, sex, caste or color.” Blavatsky did so by becoming an incredibly prolific writer, and some of her works have become cult classics, particularly The Secret Doctrine and Isis Unveiled. These works included her unique blend of science, esoteric ideas, the occult, and ancient religions and philosophies, and they remain popular today.  The Ultimate H.P. Blavatsky Collection profiles the life, works, and legacy of the influential scholar, writer, philosopher and theologian, examining her movement and its origins. This collection includes an original biography of Blavatsky’s life and her two seminal classics, The Secret Doctrine and Isis Unveiled. This collection also includes pictures, a bibliography, and a Table of Contents.
