Everything Starts from Prayer

Everything Starts from Prayer

Mother Teresa’s collected writings offer inspiration and guidance for all spiritual seekers.“This book’s contents and title say it all. Mother Teresa is a role model for each of us. Pray we may become as she was, and heal the world by using prayer to lead us on the path to spirituality and God.” —Bernie Siegel, M.D.St. Teresa of Calcutta, the woman we all knew as Mother Teresa, was a devout Catholic nun, deeply devoted to Jesus. She expressed her ceaseless devotion in many ways, central among them her well-known work with the poor and the sick. Her lesser-known expressions of faith included her deep respect for all religions and her burning wish for all people to grow closer to God. With a longing to reach as many souls as possible, she wrote, “I’ve always said we should help a Hindu become a better Hindu, a Muslim become a better Muslim, a Catholic become a better Catholic.”This carefully arranged collection of Mother Teresa’s writings promises to both inspire and guide all people, from any or no faith tradition, who are seeking to find and walk a spiritual path.

The Bondage of the Will

The Bondage of the Will

On the Bondage of the Will was Martin Luther's reply to Desiderius Erasmus' work "On Free Will," which had appeared in 1524 as Erasmus' first public attack on Luther after Erasmus had been wary about the methods of Luther for many years. At issue was whether human beings, after the Fall of Man, are free to choose good or evil. Erasmus had asserted that all humans possessed free will and that the doctrine of predestination was not in accord with the teachings contained in the Bible. Luther's response was to reason that sin incapacitates human beings from working out their own salvation, and that they are completely incapable of bringing themselves to God. The debate between Luther and Erasmus is one of the earliest of the Reformation over the issue of free will and predestination.

Rabbi Paul

Rabbi Paul

A brilliant new biography of Saint Paul, whose interpretations of the life and teachings of Jesus transformed a loosely organized, grassroots peasant movement into the structured religion we know todayWithout Paul, there would be no Christianity. His letters to various churches scattered throughout the Roman Empire articulated, for the first time, the beliefs that make up the heart of Christian practice and faith. In this extraordinary biography, Bruce Chilton explains the changing images of Paul, from the early Church period when he was regarded as the premiere apostle who separated Christianity from Judaism to more recent liberal evaluations, which paint him as an antifeminist, homophobic figure more dedicated to doctrine than to spiritual freedom. By illuminating Paul’s thoughts and contributions within the context of his time, Chilton restores him to his place as the founding architect of the Church and one of the most important figures in Western history. Rabbi Paul is at once a compelling, highly readable biography and a window on how Jesus’ message was transformed into a religion embraced by millions around the world. Drawing on Paul’s own writings as well as historical and scholarly documents about his life and times, Chilton portrays an all-too-human saint who helped to create both the most beautiful and the most troublesome aspects of the Church. He shows that Paul sought to specify the correct approach to such central concerns as sexuality, obedience, faith, conscience, and spirit, to define religion as an institution, and to clarify the nature of the religious personality—issues that Christians still struggle with today.

Why Four Gospels?

Why Four Gospels?

Why do we have four gospels in the New Testament? How were they written, preserved, and chosen? In Why Four Gospels? noted Greek and New Testament scholar David Alan Black concisely and clearly presents the case for the early development of the gospels, beginning with Matthew, rather than Mark. This is much more than a discussion of the order in which the gospels were written. Using both internal data from the gospels themselves and an exhaustive and careful examination of the statements of the early church fathers, Dr. Black places each gospel in the context of the early development of Christianity.Though Markan priority is the dominant position still in Biblical scholarship, Dr. Black argues that this position is not based on the best evidence available, that the internal evidence is often given more weight than it deserves and alternative explanations are dismissed or ignored. If you would like an outline of the basis for accepting both early authorship of the gospels and the priority of Matthew, this book is for you.

The Kingdom and the Church

The Kingdom and the Church

Michael Horton writes, “Some Christians so stress the ‘kingdom living’ of individual believers in the world that the church and its partial manifestation of the kingdom of God through the means of grace become subordinate. Others confuse the church with that kingdom in its fully realized form.” In his development and delineation of a theology of both the kingdom and the church, Horton seeks to show that they are interrelated but not identical. Along the way he explores the difference between the cultural mandate and the Great Commission, biblical images of the church, the ecclesiologies of various Christian traditions, and the integral connection between eschatology, ecclesiology, and kingdom. Derived from Michael Horton’s recently released The Christian Faith, already one of the most significant systematic theologies of the past 50 years, this digital short tackles one of today’s theological hot topics with insight and charity.

How Should I Live in This World?

How Should I Live in This World?

It’s common to hear people say that they “want to do the right thing.” But it can be tough to know what the right thing is. On what basis do we make our decisions? In this booklet, Dr. R.C. Sproul argues that the Bible is the supreme source for ethical guidance. While it doesn’t contain commands for every situation, it does provide clear principles. With wisdom and thoroughness, Dr. Sproul helps us apply these principles to several major ethical dilemmas. The Crucial Questions booklet series by Dr. R.C. Sproul offers succinct answers to important questions often asked by Christians and thoughtful inquirers.

"Free Grace" Theology

Must the gospel message include a call for people to repent of their sins? “No,” say Free Grace advocates. Is evidence of a changed life an important indication of whether a person is truly born again? “No, again,” these advocates say.But in this book, Wayne Grudem shows how the Bible answers “Yes” to both of these questions, arguing that the Free Grace movement contradicts both historic Protestant teaching and the New Testament itself. This important book explains the true nature of the Christian gospel and answers the question asked by so many people: “How can I know that I’m saved?”

When God Answers Prayer

When God Answers Prayer

The simple message of this book is that prayer worksSome people are "prayer plodders": They pray not because prayer comes easy but because they believe in its power. Others are "prayer professionals": they are gifted in the practice of prayer; prayer seems to flow authentically and effectively from their hearts. Whether you are a plodder or a professional, you can be a prayer warrior—one whose prayers are powerful and effectual—even efficient. Even if prayer doesn't always come easily or your prayers aren't always answered as you'd hoped, you will come away from this book convinced that God rewards genuine prayer. Open the pages of this book and see for yourself what happens when God answers prayer!

Myth, Ritual And Religion, Vol. 2 (of 2)

Spirit might, conceivably, be developed out of a little spirit, even out of the ghost of a tribesman. But to the conception of a " supernatural anthropomorphic being," the idea of "spirit" is not necessary. Men might imagine such an entity before they had ever dreamed of a ghost.
