The Hohenzollerns in America

The Hohenzollerns in America

Some of these stories carry over characters introduced in Further Foolishness. Some stories are humorous; some are more thoughtful. It helps to be familiar with WWI-era European politics to catch much of the humor. These satires attack the pride of the great reduced to lower East Side New York, the side effects of the war and the movies and other foibles of the day with occasionally a serious moment of sincere human appreciation.

PEN America 6: Metamorphoses

PEN America 6: Metamorphoses

The transformations in this issue of PEN America are linguistic, temporal, spatial, physical, cultural, political: In stories by William Kennedy, Mary Morris, and Marie Darrieussecq, bodies mutate into different bodies - the sort of metamorphoses Apuleius and Ovid favored. Mavis Gallant, George Saunders, and Ben Okri describe transpositions between lives and afterlives. Yusef Komunyakaa, Angela Carter, Michael Joyce, and Harlan Ellison transport classic tales through time and space. Steven Millhauser and Matthea Harvey playfully modify genres. Essays adapted from a PEN tribute to Gabriel Garcia Marquez call attention to his elegant transitions from journalist to novelist, realist to romantic to maker of inexplicable magic. Yoko Tawada, Monique Truong, Edmund Keeley, and A.B. Yehoshua recount border crossings, many of them rough, from one language to another. PEN America: A Journal for Writers and Readers is published by PEN American Center. Featuring fiction, poetry, conversation, criticism, and memoir, PEN America champions international authors and provides first-hand insight into the minds of contemporary writers through provocative symposia.   In 2000, PEN America was named one of the Ten Best New Magazines by Library Journal. PEN America has been a finalist for the Utne Independent Press Award for international coverage, and work from recent issues has been selected for Best American Essays, Best American Stories, and the Pushcart Prize. ----- PEN American Center is the largest of the 141 centers of International PEN, the world's oldest human rights organization and the oldest international literary organization. The Bishop's Daughter

The Bishop's Daughter

Patricia Johns makes her Amish romance debut with The Bishop’s Daughter. In this poignant, beautifully written novel, a faithful young Amish widow has a second chance at romance when she is reunited with her wayward first love . . .   As a bishop’s daughter and good Amish mother, widowed Sadie Hochstetler teaches her young son that God blesses those who try their best to please Him. But her brief marriage taught her that life is infinitely more complicated than that. Older, and serious, her late husband seemed a sensible choice—especially compared to Elijah Fisher, the spirited boy with whom she butted heads and hearts. Then Elijah abruptly left for the Englisher world, taking Sadie’s beloved brother along with him—a double betrayal she still strives to forgive. Especially now that Elijah has returned . . .   Elijah plans to stay in the Amish community only as long as he’s needed, helping his family and working for Sadie’s ailing father. The outside world has changed him, leading him to question rules and restrictions that others take on faith. Once, he’d been head over heels in love with the bishop’s daughter—a girl he was judged unworthy of courting. Nine years have changed so much between them. Yet something remains—a spark that, for all their differences, might light the way home again . . ."Heartrending, poignant and perceptive, this beautifully written story has a cultural rather than a solely religious focus and will appeal to fans of sweet romance across the board. A solid debut." —Library Journal STARRED REVIEW for The Bishop’s Daughter

Whirligigs

Whirligigs

A favourite dodge to get your story read by the public is to assert that it is true, and then add that Truth is stranger than Fiction. I do not know if the yarn I am anxious for you to read is true; but the Spanish purser of the fruit steamer El Carrero swore to me by the shrine of Santa Guadalupe that he had the facts from the U. S. vice consul at La Paz a person who could not possibly have been cognizant of half of them.

Letters To a Young Poet

Letters To a Young Poet

Rilke’s Letters to a Young Poet are arguably the most famous and beloved letters of the twentieth century. Written when the poet was himself still a young man, with most of his greatest work before him, they were addressed to a student who had sent Rilke some of his own writing, asking for advice on becoming a writer. The two never met, but over a period of several years Rilke wrote him these ten letters, which have been cherished by hundreds of thousands of readers for what Stephen Mitchell calls in his Foreword the "vibrant and deeply felt experience of life" that informs them. Eloquent and personal, Rilke’s meditations on the creative process, the nature of love, the wisdom of children, and the importance of solitude offer a wealth of spiritual and practical guidance for anyone. At the same time, this collection, in Stephen Mitchell’s definitive translation, reveals the thoughts and feelings of one of the greatest poets and most distinctive sensibilities of the twentieth century.

Her New Year's Fortune

It's enough to make any red-blooded single girl start thinking wistful thoughts—especially about Wyatt Fortune. Still, Sarah-Jane Early doesn't bother to fantasize. There's no way that wealthy, charismatic hunk would date a plain Jane like her….They say New Year's is a time for new beginnings, and Wyatt Fortune is sorely in need of one. After some startling family news, he has vowed to sever all ties and start fresh in Red Rock. The beautiful young woman at the bar—Savannah, she tells him—is nothing more than a momentary diversion. But could this be a moment that leads to a lifetime?

Jeanette Winterson

Sodome

Sodome

THE MERCENARY OPTION Shortly after the terror attacks on America, the American president announces the construction of an oil pipeline across Afghanistan. To stop this, and deter further Western encroachment in Central Asia, a vindictive Saudi prince retains ex-KGB terror broker Pavel Zelinkow -- a prime mover behind al Qaeda's 9/11 attack. Zelinkow plans to steal two nuclear weapons, detonating one of them among the pipeline construction crews and their military guardians, while the target of the second bomb is a mystery. U.S. special operations forces cannot be used against the terrorists hiding in Iran, so IFOR is called into action for the first time on a mission that will test them to their limits: take out the terrorists, recover the nukes, and get Zelinkow -- dead or alive.

Short Fiction

Short Fiction

Ernest Hemingway is perhaps the most influential American writer of the twentieth century. Though known mostly for his longer works, he began his writing career with the publication of short stories which helped develop his often-imitated concise, simple, and straightforward style, which stood in stark contrast to the more elaborate prose of many of his contemporaries. In 1947, during a University of Mississippi creative writing class, William Faulkner remarked that Hemingway “has never been known to use a word that might cause the reader to check with a dictionary to see if it is properly used.” Hemingway famously responded: “Poor Faulkner. Does he really think big emotions come from big words? He thinks I don’t know the ten-dollar words. I know them all right. But there are older and simpler and better words, and those are the ones I use.”Besides his writing style, Hemingway’s most well-known contribution to the literary landscape was the iceberg theory of writing, developed while composing the short story “Out of Season.” Hemingway later said of the story: “I had omitted the real end of it which was that the old man hanged himself. This was omitted on my new theory that you could omit anything if you knew that you omitted and the omitted part would strengthen the story and make people feel something more than they understood.”This collection comprises all of the public domain stories published in Hemingway’s short story collections, some miscellaneous stories published in various magazines, and his novellas. With the exception of stories within collections with a thematic link, such as In Our Time, they are arranged in publication order.
