“Anyone who loves history will love what Harry Turtledove can do with it.”—Larry Bond, New York Times bestselling author of Day of WrathIs it the war to end all wars—or war without end? What began as a conflict in Europe, when Germany unleashed a lightning assault on its enemies, soon spreads to North America, as a long-simmering hatred between two independent nations explodes in bloody combat. Twice in fifty years the Confederate States of America had humiliated their northern neighbor. Now revenge may at last be at hand.“Turtledove has proved he can divert his readers to astonishing places. He’s developed a cult following over the years; and if you’ve already been there, done that will real-history novelists Patrick O’Brian, Dorothy Dunnett, or George MacDonald Fraser, for your Next Big Enthusiasm you might want to try Turtledove. I know I’d follow his imagination almost anywhere.”—San Jose Mercury News

He is best known for his book Walden, a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings, and his essay Civil Disobedience, an argument for individual resistance to civil government in moral opposition to an unjust state. Thoreau's books, articles, essays, journals, and poetry total over 20 volumes. Among his lasting contributions were his writings on natural history and philosophy, where he anticipated the methods and findings of ecology and environmental history, two sources of modern day environmentalism. His literary style interweaves close natural observation, personal experience, pointed rhetoric, symbolic meanings, and historical lore, while displaying a poetic sensibility, philosophical austerity, and "Yankee" love of practical detail. He was also deeply interested in the idea of survival in the face of hostile elements, historical change, and natural decay; at the same time he advocated abandoning waste and illusion in order to discover life's true essential needs. He was a lifelong abolitionist, delivering lectures that attacked the Fugitive Slave Law while praising the writings of Wendell Phillips and defending abolitionist John Brown. Thoreau's philosophy of civil disobedience later influenced the political thoughts and actions of such notable figures as Leo Tolstoy, Mohandas Gandhi, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Thoreau is sometimes cited as an anarchist, and though Civil Disobedience seems to call for improving rather than abolishing government—"I ask for, not at once no government, but at once a better government"—the direction of this improvement points toward anarchism: "'That government is best which governs not at all'; and when men are prepared for it, that will be the kind of government which they will have." Richard Drinnon partly blames Thoreau for the ambiguity, noting that Thoreau's "sly satire, his liking for wide margins for his writing, and his fondness for paradox provided ammunition for widely divergent interpretations of 'Civil Disobedience.'"

Καλωσορίσατε στο Σπιντλ Κόουβ, ένα διαφορετικό καταφύγιο για δεσποινίδες με εύθραυστη υγεία που έχουν ανάγκη τον θαλασσινό αέρα, αλλά και για γυναίκες που γοητεύτηκαν υπερβολικά από τους λάθος άντρες.  Ο Βίκτορ Μπράμγουελ, ο κόμης του Ρίκλιφ, γνωρίζει πολύ καλά ότι δεν ανήκει εκεί? είναι ένα μέρος που δεν ταιριάζει στην ιδιοσυγκρασία του. Αν περνούσε από το χέρι του, θα το έσβηνε από τον χάρτη. Δεν έχει όμως πολλές επιλογές, καθώς έχει πάρει εντολή να ταξιδέψει σε όλη την επαρχία και να συστήσει μια αξιόλογη στρατιωτική δύναμη. Μοιάζει σχετικά απλή αποστολή, αλλά όλα περιπλέκονται όταν συναντάει τη γοητευτική Σουζάνα Φιντς, τη γυναίκα που κινεί τα νήματα στο Σπιντλ Κόουβ. Η Σουζάνα είναι αποφασισμένη να προστατέψει την προσωπική της ουτοπία από την εισβολή αυτού του μικρού στρατού. Ο Βίκτορ, από την άλλη, είναι εξίσου ισχυρογνώμων και έχει να αποδείξει πολλά στον εαυτό του και στους άλλους.  Η σκακιέρα έχει στηθεί και τα πιόνια κινούνται προς μια επική σύγκρουση. Ποιος θα κερδίσει όταν και οι δύο έχουν τόσο πολλά να χάσουν;

Wind Drinkers

Wind Drinkers

A thrilling mix of French noir and American Western that charts a family’s struggle for freedom and justice in a hostile mountain community.In the godforsaken valley of the Black Rimstone, four siblings meet by the viaduct, a place of their own away from home and daily life, which hold so little for them: Mark, who reads in secret against his father’s orders; Matthew, who understands the forest, the river, and all their creatures; Mabel, who wields her stunning beauty in pursuit of pleasure and independence; and Luke, so often pitied and dismissed as simpleminded, but whose fantastic dreams reveal an uncommon wisdom. Together they live as one, bound by an unshakable bond.    Hanging over them, and the rest of the valley, is the bleak prospect of work in the power plant, constructed and controlled by the fearsome Joyce. Having arrived a stranger, he owned the entire town within ten years, and now keeps a stranglehold on it through money and violence. But after generations are used and spit out in service of one man’s greed, there comes a breaking point.    Winner of the Prix Jean Giono, this masterful, parable-like novel bears witness to the power of nature and the promise of rebellion.
