The Picture of Dorian Gray

The Picture of Dorian Gray

The novel tells of a young man named Dorian Gray, the subject of a painting by artist Basil Hallward. Basil is impressed by Dorian's beauty and becomes infatuated with him, believing his beauty is responsible for a new mode in his art. Dorian meets Lord Henry Wotton, a friend of Basil's, and becomes enthralled by Lord Henry's world view. Espousing a new hedonism, Lord Henry suggests the only things worth pursuing in life are beauty and fulfillment of the senses. Realizing that one day his beauty will fade, Dorian expresses his desire to sell his soul to ensure the portrait Basil has painted would age rather than himself. Dorian's wish is fulfilled, plunging him into debauched acts.

Mademoiselle de Maupin

Mademoiselle de Maupin

Theophile Gautier's masterpiece "Mademoiselle de Maupin" might be better known for its lengthy preface than the actual novel itself. It is there in which the author discusses art for art's sake, arguing that "everything useful is ugly." The novel itself is a historical romance based on the life of French opera star Julie d'Aubigny, better known as Mademoiselle Maupin. The subject of gossip and many colorful stories during her time, Mademoiselle Maupin was known as a first-rate swordswoman who often disguised herself as a man. In "Mademoiselle de Maupin" we find a love triangle between Chevalier d'Albert, a young French Gentleman who struggles with finding a woman that meets his idealistic expectations, Rosette whom he engages in an affair with to ease his boredom, and the dashing young Theodore, who is actually Maupin disguised as a man. "Mademoiselle de Maupin" is an excellent example of the French historical romance which in its time was considered somewhat controversial for its sexually orientated themes; by today's standards however it would be considered quite tame.

Labyrinths

Labyrinths

The classic by Latin America's finest writer of the twentieth century—a true literary sensation—with an introduction by cyber-author William Gibson. The groundbreaking trans-genre work of Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986) has been insinuating itself into the structure, stance, and very breath of world literature for well over half a century. Multi-layered, self-referential, elusive, and allusive writing is now frequently labeled Borgesian. Umberto Eco's international bestseller, The Name of the Rose, is, on one level, an elaborate improvisation on Borges' fiction "The Library," which American readers first encountered in the original 1962 New Directions publication of Labyrinths. This new edition of Labyrinths, the classic representative selection of Borges' writing edited by Donald A. Yates and James E. Irby (in translations by themselves and others), includes the text of the original edition (as augmented in 1964) as well as Irby's biographical and critical essay, a poignant tribute by André Maurois, and a chronology of the author's life. Borges enthusiast William Gibson has contributed a new introduction bringing Borges' influence and importance into the twenty-first century.

The Wonderful Visit

The Wonderful Visit

The Wonderful Visit is an 1895 novel by H. G. Wells. [1] With an angel—a creature of fantasy—as protagonist, and taking place in contemporary England, the book could be classified as contemporary fantasy, although the genre was not recognised in Wells's time. The Wonderful Visit also has strong satirical themes, gently mocking customs and institutions of Victorian England as well as idealistic rebellion itself.

Swann's Way

Swann's Way

The celebrated first volume of the novel that “brilliantly explores the workings of time and memory against the backdrop of Belle Époque France” (The New Criterion).   One the greatest novels of the twentieth century, In Search of Lost Time begins with Swann’s Way, a young man’s evocative journey of perception and remembrance, “which meanders from the nameless narrator’s recollections of his Combray childhood to a time before his birth, when Swann was in love with Odette, and back again as the narrator meditates on the power of names over the imagination and recalls falling in love with Gilberte, Swann and Odette’s daughter” (Los Angeles Times).   “A masterpiece . . . Even when I’ve felt myself hopelessly drifting in my little boat, I’ve felt the lulling beauty of Proust’s writing. This is a man who can make a multi-page description of a Hawthorn blossom fascinating—and then do it again, and again, and again. What’s more, when you actually focus, pick up those oars and start powering through those dense waters, you realize just how much is going on beneath the surface. What insights. What subtle ironies. What teasing jokes. What sensual pleasures. What feats of memory and description. What loving characterizations. And what devastating character assassinations. You realize, in short, that this is the stuff.” —The Guardian   “Even those who have not read the novels are aware of the journey of memory on which the narrator goes when he tastes a madeleine dipped in tea; it has become ‘the Proustian moment.’” —The Telegraph

Justine, Philosophy in the Bedroom, & Other Writings

Justine, Philosophy in the Bedroom, & Other Writings

The biography, the philosophy, and some of the most influential works of the infamous French writer who shocked the world with his erotic novel, Justine.   No other writer has so scandalized proper society as the Marquis de Sade, but despite the deliberate destruction of over three-quarters of his work, Sade remains a major figure in the history of ideas. His influence on some of the greatest minds of the last century—from Baudelaire and Swinburne to Nietzsche, Dostoyevsky and Kafka—is indisputable. This volume contains Philosophy in the Bedroom, a major novel that presents the clearest summation of his political philosophy; Eugénie de Franval, a novella widely considered to be a masterpiece of eighteenth-century French literature; and the only authentic and complete American edition of his most famous work, Justine.   This literary portrait of Sade is completed by one of his earliest philosophical efforts, Dialogue between a Priest and a Dying Man, a selection of his letters, a fifty-page chronology of his life, two important essays on Sade, and a bibliography of his work.   “[Sade] remains a great, horrifying, but also vastly illuminating figure.” —Newsweek   “Justine is the most abominable book ever engendered by the most depraved imagination.” —Napoleon Bonaparte   “Shines a perverse and revealing spotlight on the entire era of the French Revolution . . . An important and elucidating book.” —Robert Lowry, Chicago Sun-Times
