Quand Drieu publie donc en 1941 ses " Notes pour comprendre le siècle ", il a l'immense mérite de poser le problème de manière doublement courageuse. Il s'écarte d'abord d'un conformisme officieux dominant. Celui-ci tendait à ne rechercher à la situation dramatique et à l'effondrement de la France que des responsabilités superficielles et strictement institutionnelles. D'autre part, il se sépare aussi de cet ersatz d'anticonformisme dit " des années 1930 ". On soulignera aussi, au besoin, que le rapport des " Notes pour comprendre le siècle " au christianisme et au Moyen Âge, pas éloigné de celui d'un Berdiaeff par exemple, l'écarte tout à fait des interprétations abusives. Le conformisme des uns comme le faux anticonformisme des autres conduisaient et aboutirent effectivement aux dévoiements technocratiques du Front Populaire en 1936, de Vichy en 1941 ou des diverses formules de l'immédiat après-guerre entre 1944 et 1947.

Introduction The church of the Mother of God, a katholikon of Studenica monastery located in south-central Serbia, was built both as a church and a mausoleum for the founder of the Nemanjic dynasty. The grand zupan Stefan Nemanja (r. 1167-96) began the construction of Studenica after uniting the coastal and continental territories, creating the first great Serbian state. (1) Like many influential medieval rulers, Stefan Nemanja recognized the political importance of funding religious edifices. (2) The endowments speak of the ruler's dedication to the Christian religion and reflect his power and prestige. A setting was created in Studenica in which the sculptural decoration and the fresco paintings worked together to commemorate the founder of the Nemanjic dynasty that ruled medieval Serbia for around two hundred years.
