Halford on the Dry Fly

Halford on the Dry Fly

• The champion of the dry-fly ethic developed on British chalkstreams in the late 1800sNow acknowledged as the symbolic father of modern dry-fly fishing, Frederic M. Halford was known during his remarkable fishing career as the "high priest of the art," the man whose milestone books codified the entire world of the dry-fly angler more than a century ago. Halford on the Dry Fly excerpts the core wisdoms from the original Halford book that launched the "dry-fly revolution" --and has influenced every generation of serious fly fishers since--Dry-Fly Fishing in Theory and Practice. Halford on the Dry Fly shows a first-rate angling mind at work, a gifted naturalist who witnessed an historic moment in the development of fly fishing. "No place else in the literature of fly fishing have the original basics been so clearly laid out," writes Paul Schullery.

The Fly Fisherman's Guide to the Meaning of Life

The Fly Fisherman's Guide to the Meaning of Life

The fly fisherman is a unique breed of sportsman--he loves the sparkle of sunlight dancing off a trout stream, the surreal beauty of a mayfly hatch on a spring day, and the heart-thumping eruption of a surface strike by a large trout. Here Peter Kaminsky writes about the angler's passion and his pursuit of knowledge. He explains how long days without fish can teach you how to deal with failure and how releasing a caught fish can remind us about ethics. He offers inspiration to those who love the sport as much as he does.On Riding Things OutWhen things are great, anglers are known to enter a kind of fishing rapture. But once in this state, the minute things slow down they want to race off to the next spot. This is the piscatorial presumption that the fishing is always better on the other side of the lake. It isn't-- and more times than not if you leave fish to find fish you will find nothing. When the going is good, stay with it.On The Nature Of SuccessYou fail more than you succeed. One cast out of ten, or twenty, or a hundred may produce a strike at the other end of the line.... And then, when a fish does take the fly, you must set the hook, fight it well, and not let it break your leader with its leaps and runs and dives under a rock or branch. All in all, the odds are against you big time. Still, the pursuit excites. On Home TurfHome is where you feel safe when your children go fishing. Home is where you know when it is unsafe. Home is where every one of your friends has a fish tale about a place you know. Home is where no one cuts you slack about your own embroidered fishing yarns.... Home is anywhere, then, where the quality of the experience, if only for a moment, makes you feel "I have always been here."On Getting OlderThe key to enjoyment at fifty-five is the same as the key to enjoyment at fifteen: Do whatever you can do as well as you can, then try to do a little more-- but don't try to rewrite the record books. You probably can't, and it's not important anyway. On Teaching And LearningThis would not be the frist time in the course of our week that my daughter would outfish me. As she caught big fish and learned to play them, her confidence increased and her casting improved, thanks in no small part to her guide.... I was happy that she had finally moved into the class of real fly fisherpeople.

Last of the David Teams

Last of the David Teams

The English Premier League (EPL) is the richest, and, arguably, the most competitive, soccer league in the world. It is dominated by a handful of wealthy teams that have used their financial clout to win most of the league’s trophies. Yet an EPL club outside of this elite group has become known for its ability to beat the “money teams” and consistently achieve a ranking in the top half of the league. The team is Everton Football Club (EFC), in the city of Liverpool, England. On the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, in Oakland, California,USA, professional baseball team The Oakland Athletics also has a reputation for beating the odds by defeating much wealthier opposition. The ebook Last of the David Teams explores the reasons why these two “David” teams are able to outplay the Goliaths in their respective sports. The book draws a comparison with the iconic underdog story, Moneyball, told by Michael Lewis in his book and movie of the same name. Last of the David Teams resonates beyond the sports arena at a time when one of society's most controversial Goliaths, Big Money, is attracting much attention.

Fish Won't Let Me Sleep

Fish Won't Let Me Sleep

Have you ever been so passionate about something that it occupies your every waking moment? In his latest collection of essays, celebrated writer and life-long angler James R. Babb reflects on his ardent preoccupation with the sport of fishing—one so strong that it often keeps him awake--and further recounts many of his most memorable adventures from a life spent casting flies across the globe. From the majestic lakes and streams of northern Maine, to the smaller brooks of eastern Tennessee and crossing the Atlantic to the lochs of Scotland and the chalk streams of southern England, Fish Won’t Let Me Sleep transcends international boundaries to demonstrate that the joy of fishing is universal.Fish Won’t Let Me Sleep brims with over two dozen chapters on varying aspects of the sport. In “Roamin' the Gloaming,” Babb hilariously comments on some of the more peculiar idioms of his chosen passion. The aptly titled “Snide and Prejudice,” reflects on the companionship, friendships, and occasional animosities that arise from fishing with others. And in “Simple Gifts,” Babb muses on the eternal bane and gift of all fly fishermen—the weather.Echoing the tone of great writers such as Mark Twain, Annie Dillard, and John Gierach, Babb’s poignant prose and witty observations are true testaments to the unparalleled wit of an American master.Skyhorse Publishing is proud to publish a broad range of books for fishermen. Our books for anglers include titles that focus on fly fishing, bait fishing, fly-casting, spin casting, deep sea fishing, and surf fishing. Our books offer both practical advice on tackle, techniques, knots, and more, as well as lyrical prose on fishing for bass, trout, salmon, crappie, baitfish, catfish, and more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to publishing books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked by other publishers and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

NSCA's Essentials of Sport Science

Within the domain of sport, the application of science is more apparent than ever before. Not only are universities and academic institutions scientifically investigating sport as one element of human performance, but professional teams, sporting organizations, and private training companies are embracing approaches that use scientific principles to help their athletes and teams gain a competitive edge in sporting competition. The potential for applying science to sport training and sport performance is vast. There is a demand for sport scientists who can collect and convert data into valuable information—information that drives decision making and directly influences performance outcomes. To address this growing need, the world-renowned National Strength and Conditioning Association developed the Certified Performance and Sport Scientist (CPSS) certification, along with the must-have reference for anyone in the field.NSCA’s Essentials of Sport Science features contributions from 52 globally recognized experts and thought leaders from the field of sport science. It is the only resource to go beyond sport science’s foundations—physiology, biochemistry, biomechanics, nutrition, and skill acquisition—to address the use of statistics and broader fields of data science, analytics, and technology management. Readers will explore every aspect of the sport scientist’s role: understanding training theory, performing needs analyses, conducting athlete monitoring and assessment, managing data and analytics, and educating and disseminating information. The integration of these technical skills will guide sport scientists in drawing conclusions that can be used to manipulate training methods and shape competition strategies for the betterment of athletes’ health, well-being, and performance.NSCA’s Essentials of Sport Science offers a holistic overview of the technical expertise, skills, and knowledge required to operate effectively as a modern-day sport scientist. Further, it will help prepare candidates for the NSCA’s CPSS certification exam and aid all sport scientists in acquiring and using the best available evidence—at the right time, in the right environment, and for the right individual—to maximize their performance.
