Brave Archer and His Mate

Brave Archer and His Mate

Brave Archer and His Mate is the fourth in a series originally starring international favorite Alexander Fu Sheng as master martial artist Kuo Tsing. But Fu only appears here in a cameo as the son of a character played by Lung Tien-chiang. Kuo Chue is the new hero who is out to defeat the mass murderer of his martial arts masters. In fact, this fast-moving, action-packed, Venom-filled film is even choreographed by the three core “Venoms”, making it a unique combination of grand “Martial Arts World” mayhem and special Venom-style high flying kung-fu.

Legendary director Chang Cheh was in a transitional period. The men he had made stars (Jimmy Wang Yu, Ti Lung, and David Chiang among them), had moved on to their own projects. Soon his new star, international idol Alexander Fu Sheng, would also look for other productions. So Chang used this opportunity to test the star power of some new talent, namely a Taiwanese Opera artist (Kuo Chui) and a powerful Chinese muscleman (Lo Mang) – who were soon to become the foundation for his internationally popular “Venom” series. Teaming the trio with the top supporting actors (Ku Feng and Wang Lung-wei) and the prettiest starlets (Lin Chun-chi, Shirley Yu, and Hui Ying-hung), he told an entertaining and exciting tale of a kung-fu blacksmith taking on four famous robbers while a villainous gambling boss plots to destroy them. Vengeance

Vengeance

One of the top rated films of the year and an instant classic, "Vengeance" is so loaded with Shaw Brothers filmmaking royalty, that even non-kung-fu fans will be left breathless with amazement. No screen team was more glorious than the "iron triangle" of director Chang Cheh and his dynamic duo of Ti Lung and David Chiang. The action mayhem created by acclaimed martial arts instructors Tang Chia and Yuen Woo-ping's younger brother Yuen Cheung-yan ("Charlie’s Angels" and "The Matrix: Reloaded" fight choreographer) gives David Chiang's hauntingly tense performance as the younger brother out to avenge his elder brother's death (Ti Lung) an even more mythical dimension. David Chiang won the Best Actor Award for his effort and Chang Cheh the Best Director Award at the 1970 Asian Film Festival.

Les Compères

Les Compères

In 'Les Compères', filmmaker Francis Veber (writer of 'La Cage aux Folles') ingeniously blends elements of buddy movies, thrillers and teen comedy into an endearing French screwball classic. The comic chemistry of Pierre Richard ('The Tall Blond Man with One Black Shoe') and Gérard Depardieu ('Camille Claudel', 'Green Card'), introduced in Veber’s 'La Chèvre', here energizes this antic adventure with infectious charisma and sincerity. When her 16-year-old son runs away from their Paris home, Christine (Anny Duperey, 'You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet') sidesteps her stubborn husband and separately convinces two former lovers that they are each the boy’s father. Duped into a sense of responsibility for a son they never knew, brawling newspaperman Lucas (Depardieu) and fragile neurotic Pignon (Richard) follow the boy’s trail to Nice and proceed to pack decades’ worth of dubious parenting into a few manic days battling Riviera bikers, casino racketeers and most often each other. Depardieu and Richard’s expert timing and interplay allows this tender farce to unfold with a breakneck pace that belies the honest sentiment at its heart. 'Les Compères' was remade in Hollywood as 'Fathers’ Day', starring Robin Williams and Billy Crystal.
