Shadow of the Thin Man

A jockey who threw a race is murdered in the locker room. "My, they're strict at this track!" Nora Charles exclaims. With that, she (Myrna Loy) and hubby Nick (William Powell) are off to the races on another case of murder, mirth and perfect martinis. Highlights of this fourth Thin Man include a visit to the arena for the evening's wrasslin' and dinner at Mario's Grotto where, no matter what anyone wants, the waiter insists upon the sea bass. As in all films in the series, the supporting cast is extraordinary, with Sam Levene, Barry Nelson, Donna Reed, Henry O'Neill and Stella Adler among Shadow's heroes and possible villains. Red herrings abound. But we still recommend the sea bass.

Rich, Young and Pretty

Jane Powell stars in this frothy romantic musical along with Vic Damone and Fernando Lamas. While vacationing in Paris with her father, rich Texan Jim Stauton Rogers (Wendell Corey), a cattle baron turned politician, 20-year-old Elizabeth Rogers (Powell) falls in love with handsome Andre Milan (Damone, in his film debut). She also learns to her surprise that her Gallic mother, Marie (Danielle Darrieux), is not dead, as she had been led to believe, but alive and involved with suave South American Paul Sarnac (Lamas). Among the ten musical numbers are "Wonder Why," "We Never Talk Much," and "I Can See You." The Four Freshman perform. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song.

Billy, on the surface a highly "macho" guy, wants to settle down, write a book and marry Barbara Jane. He tells the romantically very aloof Barbara Jane, who has an eye for Shake, that this is all due to the teachings of "Pyramid Power," under the direction of Friedrich Bismark (Bert Convy). Billy and the other players on the team were instructed to take the motivational course by the team's owner, Big Ed Bookman. There is also the "big" game and the moment at the wedding when Shake and Barbara Jane are almost wed.
