Metal Mania

Metal Mania

While debate rages on about Heavy Metal and its merits as a musical genre, most commentators agree that Heavy Metal kicked off in the 1960s with the blues-based rock of bands such as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple. The evolution continued with harder rocking British bands Judas Priest and Motorhead, and the more punk-influenced Iron Maiden and Def Leppard. Over in America, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper and Kiss were strapping on the high heels and layering on the make up. The really theatrical era of Heavy Metal was embraced in the 1980s with bands like Motley Crue, and bands like Megadeth and Metallica developed yet another sub-genre: Thrash Metal. Following that we’ve seen the evolution of Progressive Metal, Speed Metal, Doom Metal, Black Metal, Gothic Metal, Nu Metal and Viking Metal to name a few... Now celebrating more than 40 years of independence from the musical mainstream, the ‘Elder Statesmen’ of Heavy Metal share their thoughts on life, love, the music, the bands, politics, sex, drugs, devil worship and keeping it unreal. We go backstage with Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Ozzy Osbourne, Alice Cooper, KISS, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Metallica, Motley Crue, Sharon Osbourne, Lordi, Bleeding Through.

American Autumn: An Occudoc

American Autumn: An Occudoc

The first feature length documentary on the Occupy movement, American Autumn: an occudoc not only offers answers for those who continue to ask: “what does the occupy movement stand for? What are our demands?” – it offers a challenge and an invitation to engage with the movement. The Occupy movement seeks to be an equalizing force for good in a world dominated by greed. The question some of us within the Occupy movement are trying to solve is this one: what would a world look like that had a culture and an economic system that places human need above corporate greed, and how do we bring that world into being? Who cares what it's called? Call it Socialism, Real Democracy Now, or Chunky-Monkey-Cherry Garcia. The world needs to change radically and dramatically--and it needs to change fast. Without debating the merits of capitalism versus socialism, the way capitalism operates right now in our global culture delivers poverty, misery, and is downright homicidal. People do, in fact, die for lack of access to health-care. Human consumption is, in fact, accelerating the destruction of our planet. People do, in fact, die in wars waged based on lies that profit a precious few. Over 5 million children globally each year do not reach a 5th birthday because they die of starvation. This is not because the system that puts man on the moon or can squeeze an entire library onto a computer chip the size of a thumbnail has failed to find a way to feed these children. Rather, our system is so competitive that it accepts these deaths as a natural component of a capitalist model that dominates world markets. In short, the system is driven by corporate greed, not human need.

The Story of Film: A New Generation

The Story of Film: A New Generation

A decade after The Story of Film: An Odyssey, an expansive and influential inquiry into the state of moviemaking in the 20th century, filmmaker Mark Cousins returns with an epic and hopeful tale of cinematic innovation from around the globe. In The Story of Film: A New Generation, Cousins turns his sharp, meticulously honed gaze on world cinema from 2010 to 2021, using a surprising range of works — including Frozen, The Babadook, and Cemetery of Splendour — as launchpads to explore recurring themes and emerging motifs, from the evolution of film language, to technology’s role in moviemaking today, to shifting identities in 21st-century world cinema. Touching on everything from Parasite and The Farewell to Black Panther and Lover’s Rock, Cousins seeks out films, filmmakers and communities under-represented in traditional film histories, with a particular emphasis on Asian and Middle Eastern works, as well as boundary-pushing documentaries and films that see gender in new ways. And as the recent pandemic recedes, Cousins ponders what comes next in the streaming age: how have we changed as cinephiles, and how moviegoing will continue to transform in the digital century, to our collective joy and wonder.
