The Left Handed Gun

The Left Handed Gun

This unusually gritty Western about gunslinger William Bonney, better known as "Billy the Kid," portrays Bonney as he is historically known to have been: illiterate, unintelligent and homicidal. When a rancher treats Bonney with kindness for the first time in his hard life, Bonney becomes devoted to the man. When the rancher is killed, Bonney goes on a murderous rampage to avenge his friend, which leads head-long to a confrontation with Pat Garrett, the man who would finally gun him down. Based on the play by Gore Vidal, this Western classic stars Academy Award-winner Paul Newman ("Message in a Bottle," "The Hudsucker Proxy") as William Bonney, Lita Milan ("I Mobster," "Never Love a Stranger"), and John Dehner("The Right Stuff," "The Boys from Brazil"). This was the first movie directed by Academy Award-nominee Arthur Penn ("Bonnie and Clyde," "Little Big Man").

Rod Cameron -- who became a marquee draw with a pair of espionage serials in the 1940s and went on to establish himself as a popular cowboy star -- makes Steve a hero to reckon with in Short Grass, one of the actor's 10 films with busy shoot-'em-up director Lesley Selander. Johnny Mack Brown, a sagebrush stalwart in his own right, plays the marshal who allies with Steve. Adding to the Western pedigree is costar Cathy Downs, who plays the title role in the iconic My Darling Clementine. Mclintock! (Producer's Cut)

Mclintock! (Producer's Cut)

Wayne shows off his funny side in this 1963 western, a comedy inspired by THE TAMING OF THE SHREW. Starring as wealthy cattle baron G.W. McLintock, Wayne shows a real sense of comic timing in several scenes filled with slapstick humor. After his wife (Maureen O'Hara) and daughter leave him for the East, McLintock attempts to win them back. The dynamics between O'Hara and Wayne are the strong suit of this film, the actors having worked together previously on THE QUIET MAN. As this is by no means a revisionist western, McLintock's chauvinistic attempts to "tame" his wife fit within the problematic ideology of the larger western genre. The ultimate example of this comes at the end of the film when McLintock settles his marital dispute by publicly "spanking" his wife in what is now a notorious cinematic moment.
