James Brown and the JB's: Live At Studio 54 - New York City 1980

In his final years Brown had staged a remarkable career comeback by anyone's standards. In the U.K. alone he performed to huge audiences in a series of high-profile televised concerts that were seen by millions. These included the 2002 Queen's Jubilee Concert at Buckingham Palace, a TV Special filmed at London's Union Chapel and his show-stopping appearances at the 2004 Glastonbury Festival and Edinburgh's 2005 Live 8 concert. Revered for years by generations of rappers, samplers and funksters, all this high profile media exposure introduced his work to a whole new generation of listeners. Remarkable as his latest live performances were, James Brown was at the height of his considerable powers when the two sensational performances featured were filmed. This show was recorded in 1980 at Manhattan's ultra-fashionable Studio 54 - at that time a disco Mecca for nightlife preeners where you couldn't get in if your face didn't fit or you weren't on the right guest list. The event caught the Godfather and his revue on top form, their barnstorming performance placing less emphasis than usual on the famous JB's horn section being driven more by driving guitar and organ. Following the basic formula of a James Brown show, this show features impassioned readings of all-time stage favorites - such as 'Please, Please, Please', 'Papa's Got A Brand, New Bag' and 'It's A Man's, Man's, Man's World' - with a sprinkling of recent songs thrown in for good measure.

The Bruce McMouse Show

The Bruce McMouse Show

The Bruce McMouse Show is a previously never-before-seen film that tells the story of how Paul McCartney and Wings came to meet the inimitable impresario Bruce McMouse. Part concert film, part animated feature, 'The Bruce McMouse Show' features footage from Wings’ 1972 European tour, combined with animated scenes that introduce a family of mice living under the stage. After opening the film with ‘Big Barn Bed’, the camera takes us down through the floorboards into this charming animated world. We see Bruce McMouse regale his children with stories from his past, when son Soily rushes into the room in a whirlwind of excitement announcing that “The Wings” are playing above them. As the concert plays on, Bruce declares to his wife Yvonne that Paul and the band need his help. Bruce then proceeds to venture on stage to offers his services as producer… The film was directed by Barry Chattington and produced by Roger Cherrill with the live elements taken from four shows in The Netherlands and Germany in 1972. Paul viewed the initial concert edit and realised there was great potential in the material captured. Prior to the European tour he had the idea of a family of mice and sketched the characters. Picking up the idea, Eric Wylam took Paul’s sketches and created the final McMouse family. This storyline was incorporated and used as a linking theme within the concert footage. The voice-overs for the animated mice took place at the end of 1973, recorded by Paul and Linda McCartney, Deryck Guyler, Pat Coombs and Derek Nimmo. Production stretched from 1972 through to 1977 when the film was complete, however with changes in the band’s line-up and music scene, the project was held in the MPL archives until now. ‘The Bruce McMouse Show’ has been fully restored in 2018 alongside a brand-new stereo mix created at AIR Studios and mastered at Abbey Road Studios.

Der Rosenkavalier

Der Rosenkavalier

Ever since her first Met performances as the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier in 2000, Renée Fleming has been celebrated as one of the most compelling interpreters of the role. In this Live in HD transmission, broadcast nearly two decades later, the silver-voiced American soprano sings her final performance as the elegant princess coming to grips with the persistent passage of time. Mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča delivers a commanding portrayal as Octavian, the title “Knight of the Rose” and the Marschallin’s impetuous young lover, in Robert Carsen’s madcap new production—which sets the action in 1911, the year of the work’s premiere. As the plucky young heiress Sophie, Erin Morley sings with a radiantly beautiful soprano, while bass Günther Groissböck offers a larger-than-life portrayal of Baron Ochs auf Lerchenau, the outlandish nobleman lusting after every woman in sight. And tenor Matthew Polenzani excites with his cameo appearance as the Italian Singer in Act I. Maestro Sebastian Weigle leads a buoyant account of Strauss’s beloved score, which incorporates Viennese waltzes, raucous comedy, and the composer’s characteristically vivid palette of orchestral color.
