Lynyrd Skynyrd - Gone With the Wind

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Gone With the Wind

When Lynyrd Skynyrd emerged onto the world stage in 1973, it was the result of a collective determination; the group had struggled and fought to gain real recognition ever since their formation eight years before. And although they were initially identified, both in the music industry and in the media, as just another act in the then booming Southern-Rock movement, it became quickly apparent that not only were Skynyrd a distinctly individual collective, but also they had the potential to become one of the finest rock bands in history. Led by the headstrong and domineering Ronnie Van Zant, a tough, blue collar brawler with his powerful stage presence, distinctive vocals and gritty, honest lyrics, his energy and vision propelled the group until its tragic end in 1977. This film revisits the story of Lynyrd Skynyrd in a manner previously unattempted. Using a mixture of seldom seen film, new and archive interviews, contributions from an esteemed panel of members past and present and those closest to the group, plus location shoots, rare photographs, news reports and the most harrowing albeit fascinating first-hand description of the fateful 1977 plane crash which bought an end to the original line-up, this program is set to become the standard documentary work on this legendary band.

The Man from Mo'Wax

The Man from Mo'Wax

James Lavelle played his first DJ set at 14, launched pioneering record label Mo'Wax at 18 and released the genre defining UNKLE album Psyence Fiction at 22. His phenomenally rapid rise seemed limitless, but it's only when you're going so fast that the wheels fall off. The Man from Mo’Wax tells the remarkable story of one of the most enigmatic yet influential figures in contemporary British culture. Unearthed from over 700 hours of footage including exclusive personal archive spanning three decades, we get the rare opportunity to watch a boy become a man in the world of music. The result is an exhilarating, no holds-barred ride into the life of an extraordinary man and an equally extraordinary era, taking in some decidedly flawed decision-making (both personal and professional), Lavelle emerges as an innovative artist who thinks big and consistently overcomes adversity.

Celebrating DJ-Kicks

Celebrating DJ-Kicks

“The power of dance music is that there are no limitations of what you can do,” Horst Weidenmüller, the founder of Berlin’s !K7 label, tells Apple Music in Celebrating DJ-Kicks. “Everything is possible.” It’s that sense of freedom that’s guided DJ-Kicks since Weidenmüller created the series in 1996, and has allowed some of the world’s best electronic musicians to blur the line between artist album and DJ set. “When we started DJ-Kicks in the ’90s, there was no creative understanding that a DJ is an artist,” Weidenmüller says. “I recognized that the art form needs a platform and the DJ needs to be centered.” The DJ’s prominence has obviously shifted into a more favorable place in the decades since, and DJ-Kicks has played no small part in that evolution, as evidenced here through interviews with Carl Craig (who mixed the second-ever DJ-Kicks installment), Tiga, Jayda G, and Weidenmüller. “It’s a little bit like the history of DJs,” says Tiga.

Googoosh: Iran's Daughter

Googoosh: Iran's Daughter

Googoosh was Iran's most famous and beloved pop diva, until she was silenced following the 1979 Islamic revolution when female singers were labeled“temptresses” and forbidden to release records or perform publicly in the presence of men. In this award-winning documentary from First Run Features, Googoosh: Iran's Daughter, Iranian-American filmmaker Farhad Zamani provides a thoughtful examination of the phenomenon of Googoosh. Made during the time when Googoosh was forbidden to grant interviews or perform, the film artfully pieces together clips from Googoosh’s career on stage and screen, creating a portrait of a woman who is a cultural icon for a country trapped between tradition and modernization. The rise and fall of her career—from her beginnings as a child star prodded by her entertainer father, up to and including her twenty years of silence—is placed in the political and historical context of the ever changing status of women in Iran. Zamani explores his enigmatic subject through interviews with close friends and family, including her only son. And although still banned from performing in her homeland, Googoosh has recently rekindled the hearts of Iranians living abroad on the international touring circuit with sold out shows at such venues as the Staples Center, Wembly Stadium, and the Air Canada Arena in Toronto.
