Based on the Tony Award-winning Broadway play by David Ives, VENUS IN FUR is the latest film from master filmmaker Roman Polanski. Alone in a Paris theater after a long day of auditioning actresses for his new play, writer-director Thomas (Mathieu Amalric) complains that no actress he’s seen has what it takes to play the lead female character: a woman who enters into an agreement with her male counterpart to dominate him as her slave. Thomas is about to leave the theater when actress Vanda (Emmanuelle Seigner) bursts in, a whirlwind of erratic - and, it turns out, erotic - energy. At first she seems to embody everything Thomas has been lamenting. She is pushy, foul-mouthed, desperate and ill-prepared - or so it seems. When Thomas finally, reluctantly, agrees to let her try out for the part, he is stunned and captivated by her transformation. Not only is Vanda a perfect fit (even sharing the character's name), but she apparently has researched the role exhaustively, learned her lines by heart and even bought her own props. The likeness proves to be much more than skin-deep. As the extended "audition" builds momentum, Thomas moves from attraction to obsession until, with Vanda taking an ever more dominant role, the balance of power shifts completely.

The More the Merrier

Jean Arthur, Joel McCrea and Charles Coburn star in this delightful comedy set during World War II about a single working-girl who, because of a significant housing shortage, sublets half her Washington D.C. apartment to two men for some very merry and very romantic results. For director George Stevens, THE MORE THE MERRIER would be the final film in his three picture deal with Columbia (the others were Penny Serenade and The Talk Of the Town), as well as his last project before entering the service in the Army Signal Corps film unit. THE MORE THE MERRIER featured terrific performances from its three stars and especially from Charles Coburn, who earned himself a 1943 Academy Award as Best Supporting Actor. Jean Arthur, who Stevens called "one of the greatest comediennes the screen has ever seen," garnered an Academy Award nomination as Best Actress. The film, written specifically for Arthur, also received nominations for Best Motion Picture Story, Best Screenplay, Best Picture and Best Director. In 1966, THE MORE THE MERRIER was remade as Walk, Don't Run, which starred Cary Grant and focused on the housing shortage during the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

Hud Bannon (Newman) is a young Texas rancher who lives with his cattleman father Homer (Melvyn Douglas) and his hero-worshipping nephew Lon (Brandon DeWilde). Hud is an amoral, cold-hearted creature; his father, who holds Hud responsible for the death of his other son, tries to imbue Lon with a sense of decency and responsibility to others, but Lon is devoted to Hud and isn't inclined to listen. When hoof-and-mouth disease shows up in one of the elder Bannon's cows, Hud is all for selling the herd before the government inspectors find out. But Homer orders the cattle destroyed (the film's most harrowing sequence), driving an even deeper wedge between himself and Hud. Finally, Hud steps over the line by attempting to rape Alma (Patricia Neal), the earthy but warm-hearted housekeeper. Paul Newman was so repellantly brilliant as an unregenerate heel that his Oscar nomination for Hud was a foregone conclusion. Although Newman lost the Oscar to Sidney Poitier in Lilies of the Field, Oscars did go to Neal for Best Actress, Douglas for Best Supporting Actor, and cinematographer James Wong Howe.

The Walk

On Thanksgiving Day 1987, residents of Neskowin, a small town on the North Oregon Coast, discovered the savagely murdered body of Alain Malessard, a French citizen, in a closed, U.S. Forest Service campground. He was bicycling across North America, fulfilling a lifelong dream. An investigation ensued, suspects were identified, but no one was ever charged. The story of the murder gradually disappeared.Old-Growth Murder retraces Malessard’s five-month journey across North America, interviewing a number of family friends, as well as the countless Oregon authorities that handled the yearlong investigation. Interview and b-roll locations include British Columbia, Alberta, and France. The film weaves together extensive interviews with previously unseen crime scene material, family photos, home movies, and a decade worth of investigative artifacts that help propel the exhaustive police procedural. The film’s climax is the 1993 visit to Oregon by Malessard's parents to meet with investigators and visit the now shuttered campground where their son was murdered.

Jack Gable (John Candy) finds himself embroiled in protecting his beloved Laura (Emma Samms), an actress who plays Rachel Hedison in Jack's show — "Beyond Our Dreams" — from having her character being killed off by the program's producers, the Sherwoods (Jerry Orbach, Renee Taylor). Laura has recently broken off with her co-star and lover Dennis (David Rasche) and is heading off for a weekend with Jack. As Jack unloads Laura's luggage, he conks himself on the head and knocks himself out. He awakens in a town bearing a name similar to the town in his soap opera. Dennis is on hand, but as his character in the show — Dr. Paul Kirkland. Jack realizes that he has found himself in an alternative world made up of his soap opera world — particularly apparent when he is recognized as Jack Gates, "the Wolf of Wall Street." Jack then meets Laura, who, in this soap opera world, is actually Janet Dubois, the daughter of a late biochemist who invented a pill that allows anyone to eat whatever they want and not gain any weight. The unscrupulous Hedison family (Raymond Burr, Charles Rocket, Dylan Baker) want to steal the formula for the pill and make a fortune for their pharmaceutical company. Jack then discovers that he can exit and re-enter the show at will and can alter the narrative of the show however he wants by typing up new plot points on his typewriter. In order to save Laura's character from the Sherwoods, Jack re-writes the show to save Janet by having his own character come to her rescue at the last minute.
