The Vampire Diaries: The Return: Nightfall

The Vampire Diaries: The Return: Nightfall

New York Times bestselling series

The Return: Nightfall is the fifth book in L.J. Smith’s New York Times bestselling Vampire Diaries series.

Elena Gilbert is back from the dead, but she’s come back changed—with newfound powers and blood that is irresistible to vampires, including Stefan and Damon Salvatore, the two vampire brothers who love her. Unfortunately, it’s not just vampires who are drawn to her. Darkness is infiltrating her hometown of Fell’s Church and is taking over the minds of young girls. Even worse, a demon has taken possession of Damon, causing him to turn on his brother, Elena’s friends, and even on Elena herself.

The Return: Nightfall is perfect for fans of the hit CW TV show The Vampire Diaries, as well as fans of the original New York Times bestselling series who can’t wait to see what happens next with Elena, Stefan, and Damon.

  • So Close to Being a Great Read

I read this book freshman year when it first came out. This is the book that got me into reading horror and thrillers. Smith was one of my favorite writers when I was younger. She has great ideas, strong female characters, and knows how to create a good story. This book reads at a higher level than most of her works and is, like others have said, quite different from everything else she has done. The four original VD novels had their tense, dark moments (especially the 4th), but this one takes it to a new level. There’s some amazingly, truly frightening moments in this novel that will put you on edge. Unfortunately Smith’s editors and publishers did her some injustices that started with this novel. There’s a lot of errors that they should have caught and quite often there are moments of over description that lead to a word salad. A better editor would have focused on cutting back these scenes and correcting the errors instead of walking all over Smith’s creativity and trying to take over the plot and shape it into what they wanted. In honesty, The Return series has some of Smith’s greatest ideas, but were poorly executed. Better editing could have made this into a fantastic book.

  • Can’t finish this book

As a lover of fantasy and sci fi I appreciate this book a lot. I was going to give this one star due to the descriptive repetitiveness and milking of the same horror scene over and over... but I absolutely loved seeing things from Damon’s point of view (especially drunk Damon) and the escape room scene with the gang and the trees in the the car was brilliant. However I feel like this series needed better editors.

  • Very Confusing

There are a lot of typos and it is so far out there that it doesn’t fall in line with the first four books. It’s like the writer did a complete 180 degree turn.

  • The fun stopped here

I have enjoyed all the Vampire Diaries. . .until this one. What a draggy read! And as crazy as this sounds ( being an avid vampire book fan) this one was just too far from reality). The only reason I finished it was to get to the next book in the series.
