A Letter to Veronica

A Letter to Veronica

In September '95 Michael Sheridan began to collaborate with Veronica Guerin on a screenplay: the story of a woman journalist who takes on the crime bosses of the Dublin underworld. Here, with that story now a major film, starring Patrick Bergin and twice-Oscar nominated Joan Allen, he recounts the unique story of his relationship with Veronica. 'A Letter to Veronica' powerfully expresses his personal grief and rage, and with passion and eloquence, conveys his sense of her being one of the most extraordinary woman of this century.

Athelstan (Penguin Monarchs)

Athelstan (Penguin Monarchs)

The formation of England occurred against the odds: an island divided into rival kingdoms, under savage assault from Viking hordes. But, after King Alfred ensured the survival of Wessex and his son Edward expanded it, his grandson Athelstan inherited the rule of both Mercia and Wessex, conquered Northumbria and was hailed as Rex totius Britanniae: 'King of the whole of Britain'.Tom Holland recounts this extraordinary story with relish and drama, transporting us back to a time of omens, raven harbingers and blood-red battlefields. As well as giving form to the figure of Athelstan - devout, shrewd, all too aware of the precarious nature of his power, especially in the north - he introduces the great figures of the age, including Alfred and his daughter Aethelflaed, 'Lady of the Mercians', who brought Athelstan up at the Mercian court. Making sense of the family rivalries and fractious conflicts of the Anglo-Saxon rulers, Holland shows us how a royal dynasty rescued their kingdom from near-oblivion and fashioned a nation that endures to this day.

John the Baptist

John the Baptist

A study of the Biblical figure John the Baptist by the Reverend Frederick Brotherton Meyer, a Baptist pastor. From the author's preface: The life and character of John the Baptist have always had a great fascination for me; and I am thankful to have been permitted to write this book. But I am more thankful for the hours of absorbing interest spent in the study of his portraiture as given in the Gospels. I know of nothing that makes so pleasant a respite from the pressure of life's fret and strain, as to bathe mind and spirit in the translucent waters of Scripture biography. As the clasp between the Old Testament and the New—the close of the one and the beginning of the other; as among the greatest of those born of women; as the porter who opened the door to the True Shepherd; as the fearless rebuker of royal and shameless sin—the Baptist must ever compel the homage and admiration of mankind. In many respects, such a life cannot be repeated. But the spirit of humility and courage; of devotion to God, and uncompromising loyalty to truth, which was so conspicuous in him, may animate us. We, also, may be filled with the spirit and power of Elijah, as he was; and may point, with lip and life, to the Saviour of the world, crying, "Behold the Lamb of God."

The Unfinished Odyssey of Robert Kennedy

The Unfinished Odyssey of Robert Kennedy

“Far and away the best book written about Senator Kennedy” from the Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist and bestselling author (The New York Times). Structured around the 1968 Democratic presidential campaign, The Unfinished Odyssey of Robert Kennedy offers an in-depth exploration of Robert Kennedy, both as a man and a politician. Kennedy’s mass appeal to minority groups, his antiwar stance, and his support from Catholics made him unlike any other politician of his stature in the late 1960s. Acclaimed journalist David Halberstam dives into Kennedy’s career, covering his work as US attorney general and campaign manager for his brother John, his run for a New York state senate seat, and his candidacy in the 1968 Democratic presidential primary. Through this crucial period, he charts Kennedy’s evolution as one of the nation’s most clear-headed progressives, ultimately revealing a man who—even now—personifies the shift toward a more equal America. This ebook features an illustrated biography of David Halberstam including rare images from the author’s estate.

Man in the Saddle

Man in the Saddle

A master storyteller in the great tradition of Zane Grey and Louis L'Amour MAN IN THE SADDLE—He fought his way back from hell—alone! The combine drove Owen Merritt from his land, branding him a coward and a killer while forcing him into hiding. But they had made one drastic, fatal mistake: they had forgotten to kill him! HIGH TRAILS AND FAST HORSES It was the gray first-dawn, and Owen Merritt was off the trail, halted on the edge of timber. Ahead of him stood the cabin where the Skull outfit's chuck-wagon crew still slept. He dropped from the saddle and drew his rifle from its boot. There would be five or six men in the cabin and in another fifteen minutes they would be stirring. Merritt steadied his rifle against the side of a small pine, knowing what he had to do. When he pulled the trigger of the Winchester he said goodbye to the flat country. It would be high trails and fast horses, beans and bacon over a quick campfire, and fade away. He took aim on the high corner of the cabin window and let go. BOUGH COUNTRY-BLOODTHIRSTY MEN The combine was too big for Owen Merritt—too powerful and too ruthless. They drove him off his land. They branded him coward and killer. Then they shamed him before the only woman he ever wanted. So he went into hiding. The only thing was that he couldn't get rid of the disgrace that lodged in his gut. Or the hunger for the vast cattle lands he had lost. With no choice Owen Merritt went back, because those scum had made one drastic mistake: they forgot to kill him! ERNEST HAYCOX IS ONE OF THE GIANTS IN THE WESTERN GENRE, RANKING WITH BESTSELLING AUTHORS LOUIS L'AMOUR AND ZANE GREY.

A Short Life of Marie Antoinette

A Short Life of Marie Antoinette

“Let them eat cake!”Did she really say it?After a two-day trial begun on 14 October 1793, Marie Antoinette was convicted by the Revolutionary Tribunal of high treason, and she was executed by guillotine on Place de la Révolution on 16 October 1793. Long after her death, she remains a major historical figure, the subject of books, films and other forms of media. Politically engaged authors have deemed her the quintessential representative of class conflict, western aristocracy and absolutism. Some of her contemporaries, such as Jefferson, attributed to her the start of the French Revolution. For others, Marie Antoinette was a victim of her family ambition and the general situation in France. However, even her critics have recognized her qualities as a mother and her courage in dying. In A Short Life of Marie Antoinette historian John Abbott takes the reader from Antoinette’s marriage in mere girlhood to the royal stage and her ultimate role as a central figure in European history.

Autobiografia

Autobiografia

Hayek ha studiato a Vienna e a New York.
