L’Autobiografia di Friedrich A. von Hayek è un prezioso patrimonio, in cui il lettore può trovare fecondità di idee e varietà di eventi. Uno dei principali protagonisti della cultura del Novecento racconta la sua vita: mostra la sua formazione, le affinità intellettuali, gli scontri teorici, le peripezie, il suo lungo viaggio all’interno delle scienze sociali. Hayek ha studiato a Vienna e a New York. E ha poi insegnato nella stessa capitale austriaca, a Londra, Chicago, Friburgo (i.B.). Ha vissuto in territorio britannico per quasi vent’anni, partecipando in prima linea a quelli che sono stati chiamati gli «anni d’oro» della London School of Economics and Political Science. La sua disputa teorica con Keynes costituisce una delle pagine più rilevanti della sua vita e della cultura economica. Da quel periodo e da quelle vicende ha preso avvio la sua riformulazione del liberalismo classico. Il che lo portato a essere, per buona parte del Ventesimo secolo, il maggiore punto di riferimento per quanti, pur nelle convulsioni e nelle difficoltà di tanti momenti, hanno continuato a credere nel futuro della civiltà liberale. Hayek è stato insignito del Premio Nobel per l’economia nel 1974. Questa edizione italiana dell’Autobiografia contiene in appendice una lunga conversazione con James M. Buchanan. È un dialogo di altissimo livello, fra uomini ben consapevoli dei problemi del nostro tempo e fortemente motivati a porre la loro conoscenza al servizio degli altri. Continuant ses recherches vers des milieux où les activités étaient bien différentes, Bernard Auffray nous offre aujourd’hui, avec « Édouard Belin, le père de la télévision », la biographie d’un grand inventeur. Né en 1876, tenaillé dès l’enfance par le goût de l’observation et par l’esprit de recherche, mais issu d’un milieu de sévères hommes de robe alsaciens, Édouard Belin ne put faire les études scientifiques qu’il eut désiré. Et cependant, dès 1894, il prenait un premier brevet qu’on voulut lui acheter aux États-Unis et, dès 1895, il « imaginait » la télévision. Inventeur des premières téléphotographies exploitables, des « bélinogrammes », pionnier de la télévision, Édouard Belin fut, de son vivant, comblé d’honneurs. Trop oublié aujourd’hui, il était bon que fut rappelée son action en un ouvrage qui se place comme l’écrit Étienne Wolff, « non sur le plan scientifique, mais sur celui de l’esprit de la découverte ».
