Es gibt Fotos, auf denen ähnelt der junge Erich Mühsam der Revolutions-Ikone Che Guevara. Und ähnlich konsequent und radikal war er in seinem Denken. Zwar war es Erich Mühsam durchaus nicht in die Wiege gelegt, Revoluzzer zu werden. Doch das dritte Kind des gutbürgerlichen Lübecker Apothekers Siegfried Seligmann Mühsam und dessen Frau Rosalie verspürte schon früh den Drang, gesellschaftliche Missstände aufzudecken, politische Unterdrückung anzuprangern und für wahrhafte demokratische Emanzipation zu kämpfen. In Berlin und später München wird er Zentralfigur der künstlerischen Bohème und des revolutionären antifaschistischen Freiheitskampfes, immer wieder von einem erzkonservativen vor-nationalsozialistischen Regime angeklagt und in Haft genommen. Mühsam gehört zu den Initiatoren und Anführern der Münchner Räterepublik ab dem 7. April 1919, die jedoch nur wenige Wochen Bestand hat, bis sie von Rechtsnationalen überfallen wird. Wieder wird er verhaftet. Mit der Machtergreifung der Nazis wird Widerstand vollends unmöglich. In der Nacht vom 27. auf den 28. Februar 1933 – es ist die Nacht des Reichstagsbrandes – schlagen die Nazis zu und verhaften ihn in seiner Berliner Wohnung. Anderthalb Jahre später, am 10. Juli 1934, wird Erich Mühsam im KZ Oranienburg von SS-Schergen ermordet. Erich Mühsam wurde auf dem Waldfriedhof Dahlem in Berlin beigesetzt. Heute sind viele Straßen und Plätze in ganz Deutschland nach ihm benannt. Diese Ausgabe erhebt nicht den Anspruch, eine Gesamtausgabe von Erich Mühsams Werk zu sein.
