Get Better at Anything

Get Better at Anything

The author of the Wall Street Journal bestseller Ultralearning explores why it’s so difficult for people to learn new skills, arguing that three factors must be met to make advancement possible, and offering 12 maxims to improve the way we learn.Life revolves around learning—in school, at our jobs, even in the things we do for fun. Yet learning is often mysterious. Sometimes it comes fairly effortlessly: quickly finding our way around a new neighborhood or picking up the routine at a new job. In other cases, it’s a slog. We may spend hours in the library, yet still not do well on an exam. We may want to switch companies, industries, or even professions, but not feel qualified to make the leap. Decades spent driving a car, typing on a computer, or hitting a tennis ball don’t reliably make us much better at them. Improvement can be fickle, if it comes at all.In Get Better At Anything, Scott Young argues that there are three key factors in helping us learn:See—Most of what we know comes from other people. The ease of learning from others determines, to a large extent, how quickly we can improve.Do—Mastery requires practice. But not just any practice will do. Our brains are fantastic effort-saving machines, which can be both a tremendous advantage and a curse.Feedback—Progress requires constant adjustment. Not just the red stroke of a teacher’s pen, but the results of hands-on experience. When we’re able to learn from the example of other people, practice extensively ourselves, and get reliable feedback, rapid progress results. Yet, when one, or all, of these factors is inhibited, improvement often becomes impossible. Using research and real-life examples, Young breaks down these elements into twelve simple maxims. Whether you’re a student studying for an exam, an employee facing a new skill at work, or just want to get better at something you’re interested in, his insights will help you do it better.

Mainstreet Equity Corp. (A)

Mainstreet Equity Corp. (A)

As a major player in Western Canada's real estate market, Mainstreet Equity Corp. has a unique strategy for success: instead of simply buying and selling properties, Mainstreet also upgrades and manages them, thereby enhancing their value. In particular, Mainstreet concentrates its efforts on the multifamily sector, acquiring apartment buildings and townhouses to rented or sold at a profit under the Mainstreet brand. The company president and chief executive officer is at a professional crossroads where the future of Mainstreet is concerned. He wants to ride the wave of rapid growth that his young company is experiencing, yet at the same time, he wants to preserve the values of a small entrepreneurial firm. Control over issues such as quality, service, buying and staffing is important to him and easy to facilitate under current conditions. But the opportunity to expand is also tempting and at hand. Mainstreet's board of directors must work towards a decision regarding whether or not to expand the business, and if so, how rapidly and where? Or if not, the board must decide on an alternative course of action that would prepare the company for expansion in the future.

Effective Proposal Writing

Effective Proposal Writing

This is a simple short proposal microbook aimed at making an impact on your next proposal. It is not preachy and not long so you can finish it before you start on that next contract tender. It's worth the cost if it helps 10% into a better proposal. I have written successful proposals worth millions of dollars, and I have reviewed and scored proposals worth almost as much. I have condensed my experience down to a microbook and a premium version with examples. This basic book is prescriptive not descriptive. It explains things to consider not knowing what your area is; rather than going through long examples that might not make sense. It makes 5 or 6 important points quickly rather than dressing them in 200 pages of fluff. In fact, it's written like an effective proposal. Succinct, on point, and meets the requirements. In this case, the requirements are: how can you write an more effective proposal?

Lessons from the Global Financial Crisis

Lessons from the Global Financial Crisis

Adam Smith was an advocate of the free market; however his first and widely-acclaimed work, The Theory of Moral Sentiments, was on ethics. While commentators tend to review this work in isolation from his writing on political economy, Richard Morgan argues that although The Wealth of Nations is concerned with political economy, Smith's pointed attacks on exploitation and greed reflect the ethics outlined in his first work and illuminate the constructive role he proposed for government.

To najpiękniejsza kremówka w cukierni książek popularnonaukowych. Statystyka pozwala tworzyć mity – i je obalać. The Saga of Mirabel and Dorval Airports

The Saga of Mirabel and Dorval Airports

On May 1, 2014, the directors of ADM (Aéroports de Montréal) announced a call for tenders to demolish the Mirabel terminal, putting a definitive end to the passenger transport vocation at this airport inaugurated with great fanfare in October 1975. But what happened? Who is responsible for this mess? Could it have been done differently? Was the best location selected for this airport? Why did we fail to connect Mirabel with a fast train, as originally planned? What about Dorval airport, now Montréal-Trudeau? How much longer will it be able to develop? What happened to the rail shuttle? What does the future hold for both airports? What lessons can we draw from this saga? These are just some of the questions this book seeks to answer.
